1953 Michigan Wolverines Baseball Team
The 1953 Michigan Wolverines baseball team represented the University of Michigan in the 1953 NCAA baseball season. The Wolverines played their home games at Ferry Field. The team was coached by Ray Fisher in his 33rd season at Michigan. The Wolverines won the 1953 College World Series, defeating the Texas Longhorns in the championship game. Ray Fisher (baseball)
Ray Lyle Fisher (October 4, 1887 – November 3, 1982) was an American professional baseball pitcher and college coach. He pitched all or part of ten seasons in Major League Baseball. His debut game took place on July 2, 1910. His final game took place on October 2, 1920. During his early professional career he played for the New York Yankees and Cincinnati Reds. From 1921 to 1958, he coached the University of Michigan Wolverines baseball team, and served as assistant coach for basketball and football. In 1929 and 1932 he took the baseball team to Japan for a month each time at the invitation of Meiji University, where they played several games against Japanese university teams around the nation. Bill Mogk
William C. Mogk (November 7, 1931 – April 17, 2021) was an American baseball player. He was the captain of the 1953 Michigan Wolverines baseball team that won the school's first College World Series championship. He was inducted in the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor in 2002. University of Michigan Mogk enrolled at the University of Michigan in 1950. While attending Michigan, Mogk played baseball for the Michigan Wolverines baseball team from 1950 to 1953 and earned varsity letters in 1951, 1952, and 1953. He was a second baseman as a sophomore in 1951 but moved to first base for his junior and senior years. During the 1952 season, Mogk was perfect on defense, going the entire year (his first at first base) without an error. He was "the first Wolverine to play errorless for an entire season."
