1953 Dunedin Mayoral Election
The 1953 Dunedin mayoral election was part of the New Zealand local elections held that same year. In 1953, elections were held for the Mayor of Dunedin plus other local government positions including twelve city councillors. The polling was conducted using the standard first-past-the-post electoral method. Campaign A major talking point in the lead up to the election was the potential of a clash with the 1953 Royal Tour. There were proposals to postpone local elections until early 1954 over fears of reduced turnout due to a conflicted schedule. The proposals were considered by the Minister of Internal Affairs William Bodkin, who ultimately decided against it. Len Wright, the incumbent Mayor, was re-elected for a second term. He defeated a spirited challenge from Phil Connolly the sitting Labour MP for Dunedin Central, who despite losing the mayoralty was elected to the Otago Harbour Board, where he became deputy-chairman. Len Wright
Sir Leonard Morton Wright (1906 – 22 October 1967) was a Dunedin businessman and was Mayor of Dunedin from 1950 to 1959. He was born in Australia and educated in Sydney. He married Cecily Bell in 1936. He was a tea importer and formed his own business in 1927. He was on the Dunedin City Council for ten years, was Chairman of the Otago Development Council, and was honorary tea controller from 1941 to 1950. He was a rugby referee and sports administrator. In 1953, Wright was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Medal. He was appointed a Knight Bachelor in the 1957 New Year Honours. Morton died at Dunedin on 22 October 1967, and his ashes were buried at Andersons Bay Cemetery Andersons Bay Cemetery is a major cemetery in the New Zealand city of Dunedin.
