The 1952–53 NCAA men's ice hockey season began in November 1952 and concluded with the 1953 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Tournament's championship game on March 14, 1953, at the Broadmoor Ice Palace in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This was the 6th season in which an NCAA ice hockey championship was held and is the 59th year overall where an NCAA school fielded a team. Broadmoor World Arena (1938)
The Broadmoor World Arena was a skating rink and hockey arena located at The Broadmoor Resort & Spa in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Originally an outdoor equestrian center and riding academy, the building was enclosed and converted into an ice arena which opened in January 1938. It was the original home of the Colorado College Tigers hockey team, as well as the Broadmoor Skating Club, a major force in the figure skating community. The building served as the first home of the NCAA Hockey Championships, hosting the first ten Final Fours (1948–1957) and once more, in 1969. The arena served as host to the International Ice Hockey Federation World Championships in 1962. It also hosted the World Figure Skating Championships five times between 1957 and 1975. Michigan State Spartans Men's Ice Hockey
The Michigan State Spartans men's ice hockey team is the college ice hockey team that represents Michigan State University (MSU). The team plays at the Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, Michigan, on the MSU campus. The current head coach is Adam Nightingale, who took over coaching duties on May 3, 2022, after Danton Cole was fired. Michigan State currently competes in the Big Ten Conference. The MSU ice hockey program has seven CCHA regular season championships and 11 CCHA Tournament titles. MSU has also won 12 Great Lakes Invitational titles. The Spartans have been in the NCAA tournament 23 times, with nine Frozen Four appearances and three national titles ( 1966, 1986, and 2007). Herb LaFontaine
Herb LaFontaine is a Canadian retired ice hockey defenceman who starred for Rensselaer. Career LaFontaine played two seasons for Rensselaer as the team was ascending to the top of the college hockey landscape. In each of his two campaigns, the Engineers finished atop the Tri-State League standings and ended the year with 15 wins. For his second year with the program LaFontaine was named team captain and he led the Engineers to their first NCAA Tournament appearance. Middlebury Panthers Men's Ice Hockey
The Middlebury Panthers men's ice hockey team represents Middlebury College in men’s hockey and has done so since 1922 (with the exception of a few years during World War II). The Panthers currently play at the Division III and have won the most championships (8) of any D-III program. For a time the team did play along with top-level programs but when men's ice hockey divided into separate tiers in the mid-1960s Middlebury left the upper echelon. History Middlebury played as an Independent program, as all schools did officially, prior to 1950 but the Panthers were a founding member of the NCAA's first ice hockey conference, the Tri-State League. Defenceman
Defence or defense (in American English) in ice hockey is a player position that is primarily responsible for preventing the opposing team from scoring. They are often referred to as defencemen, D, D-men or blueliners (the latter a reference to the blue line in ice hockey which represents the boundary of the offensive zone; defencemen generally position themselves along the line to keep the puck in the zone). Doug Binning
Douglas John Binning was a Canadian ice hockey defenceman who won a Memorial Cup in 1950 and later starred for Middlebury. Career Binning played for the Montreal Junior Canadiens, then a feeder team for Montreal Canadiens, and helped the team win the 1950 Memorial Cup. The team included several future NHL players such as Charlie Hodge, Don Marshall and Dickie Moore. After winning the championship, Binning was able to continue playing hockey when he started attending Middlebury College. Because the team did not bother to support a freshman team Binning joined the varsity squad from the start and played four years for the program. Northeastern Huskies Men's Ice Hockey
The Northeastern Huskies men's ice hockey team is an NCAA Division I college ice hockey program that represents Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts. The team has competed in Hockey East since 1984 and has won three tournament titles, having previously played in the Eastern College Athletic Conference ( ECAC), where they won one tournament championship. The Huskies currently play home games at the 4,666-seat Matthews Arena, the world's oldest hockey arena still in use. Ray Picard
D. Raymond "Ray" Picard (born January 4, 1928) is a member of the Northeastern University athletics Hall of Fame. Picard was elected in 1977 for his exploits as a hockey goalie. Picard was a two time All-American for the Huskies, the first All-American at Northeastern. Before coming to Huntington Avenue Picard spent two years in the Marine Corps. He also honed his hockey skills for the Boston Junior Olympics and was also voted that Most Valuable Player in the 1948 US Amateur Championships. At Northeastern, Picard besides being named All-American twice, also won the Leonard M. Fowle Award, for New England's Most Outstanding Player and the Walter A. Goaltender
In ice hockey, the goaltender (commonly referred to as the goalie) is the player responsible for preventing the hockey puck from entering their team's net, thus preventing the opposing team from scoring. The goaltender mostly plays in or near the area in front of the net called the '' goal crease'' (often referred to simply as '' the crease''). Goaltenders tend to stay at or beyond the top of the crease to cut down on the angle of shots. In the modern age of goaltending there are two common styles, butterfly and hybrid (hybrid is a mix of the traditional stand-up style and butterfly technique). Because of the power of shots, the goaltender wears special equipment to protect the body from direct impact. Jim Mattson
James Mattson is an American ice hockey goaltender who backstopped Minnesota to its first two NCAA Tournament appearances. Career Mattson grew up playing junior hockey in the Minnesota area, but for his senior year of high school he headed to Nova Scotia. He only appeared in 7 games for the Halifax St. Mary's because he joined the University of Minnesota for the spring semester in 1952. Mattson played 8 games for the gophers, providing much needed stability in goal as Minnesota finished the season winning 7 of their final 8 games. The following year Mattson started for the Gophers and he produced phenomenal results; he tied the NCAA record with 22 wins and finished second in the nation with a 2.36 goals against average setting single-season program records in wins, g.a.a., save percentage, and helped the gophers win their first conference title (tied with Michigan). The Division I AHCA All-American Teams are an annual honor bestowed by the American Hockey Coaches Association to the college hockey players judged to be the top performers in their division. Each team is composed of at least one goaltender, two defensemen and three forwards on ice hockey programs. At least one all-star team has been named by the since the start of NCAA tournament play in 1947–48 after the conclusion of either the regular season or the conference tournaments. John Matchefts
John Peter Matchefts (June 18, 1931 – November 10, 2013) was an American ice hockey player and coach. Matchefts played for Team USA at the 1956 Winter Olympics. Career Player An Eveleth native from birth, Matchefts played for his hometown high school ice hockey team, earning three consecutive all-tournament team honors in his time there and helping Eveleth High School win state titles in his junior and senior years. Matchefts then moved on to Michigan, signing up to play for the national powerhouse under the charge of Vic Heyliger. After sitting out his freshman season (a normal occurrence at the time) Matchefts joined the varsity team just in time for them to win the school's second national title in 1951.
