1952 Speedway Southern League
The 1952 Southern League was the first season of the newly created regional third tier of speedway racing in the United Kingdom for Southern British teams. From the defunct National League Division Three of the previous season, only Poole Pirates did not join the new league. Ipswich Witches and Southampton Saints were new entrants. Rayleigh Rockets were champions whilst Long Eaton Archers withdrew mid-season. George Wall of Plymouth topped the averages. Swindon Robins
The Swindon Speedway team, also known as the Swindon Robins, are an English motorcycle speedway team established in 1949 that have competed primarily in the top division of speedway league competition in the United Kingdom. They are five times league champions of the United Kingdom. The club have raced on their home track at the Abbey Stadium, Lady Lane, Blunsdon since their inception. History 1928–1949 The formation of the club followed the sport's prehistory in the town at the now-demolished Gorse Hill Aerodrome, where dirt track racing had taken place since 1928. Rayleigh Weir Stadium
Rayleigh Weir Stadium was a speedway, greyhound racing and stock car stadium in Weir between Rayleigh and Thundersley in England. It is not to be confused with the Rayleigh Greyhound Sports Stadium that existed in O’Tooles Meadow on Down Hall Road. Origins In 1947 the area chosen for a new stadium was a small village called Weir between the small market town of Rayleigh and the district of Thundersley which was largely rural. It would be situated just six miles from Southend on the south side of the Southend Arterial Road, this particular stretch of road is of historical importance to the motoring world as it was the first road to be built in Britain specifically for motor vehicles which opened on 25 March 1925. The new stadium could be accessed via Claydons Lane or Rat Lane. The 1947 application by Francis McGreavey to the Benfleet Union was originally refused but later granted on appeal. The British Newspaper Archive web site provides access to searchable digitized archives of British and Irish newspapers. It was launched in November 2011. History The British Library Newspapers section was based in Colindale in north London, until 2013, and is now divided between the St Pancras and Boston Spa sites. The library has an almost complete collection of British and Irish newspapers since 1840. This is partly because of the legal deposit legislation of 1869, which required newspapers to supply a copy of each edition of a newspaper to the library. London editions of national daily and Sunday newspapers are complete back to 1801. Pennycross Stadium
Pennycross Stadium was a greyhound racing and speedway stadium in north Plymouth, Devon. Origins In 1928 southeast of Pennycross village and directly east of the Pennycross vicarage an area of rural land was identified for a greyhound track in the north of Plymouth. There had been attempts at racing on the Polo Grounds in nearby Roborough and Beacon Park also hosted summer racing but this was the first time a substantial stadium was being constructed. The venture would cost over £30,000 and take over six months to build before coming to life and the track was one of nineteen that the Greyhound Racing Association (GRA) had a financial interest in. Knockout Cup (speedway)
Knockout Cup (sometimes referred to as the KO Cup) is a type of British motorcycle speedway competition, examples of which have run annually since 1929. Each tier of British Speedway has its own respective Knockout Cup. The current Knockout Cup competitions are the SGB Premiership Knockout Cup (tier one), the SGB Championship Knockout Cup (tier two) and the National League Knockout Cup (tier three). The cups have been run in the past under the associated name of the League at the time. Jack Unstead
John Edward Unstead (16 February 1926 – 13 April 1962) was an international motorcycle speedway rider from England. He earned two international caps for the England national speedway team. Biography Unstead, born in Bethnal Green, London, began his British leagues career riding for Rayleigh Rockets during the 1949 Speedway National League Division Three season. During his novice season, he was one of the more positive factors in a disappointing season for Rayleigh. Hubert Henry Hoskin (4 December 1927 – 20 January 2005) was a motorcycle speedway rider from England. During his speedway career he was known as Goog Hoskin. Biography Hoskin, born in Exeter, began his British leagues career riding for Exeter Falcons during the 1949 Speedway National League Division Three season. He spent seven seasons with the Devon club from 1949 to 1955, improving his average season by season and averaged 10.86 and was the division's leading rider during the 1953 Speedway Southern League The 1953 Southern League was the second season of the regional third tier of speedway racing in the United Kingdom for Southern British teams.
