1951 World Figure Skating Championships
The World Figure Skating Championships is an annual figure skating competition sanctioned by the International Skating Union in which figure skaters compete for the title of World Champion. The 1951 championships took place on February 23–25 in Milan, Italy. It was the first year after World War II that athletes from Germany and Japan were allowed to participate in international sport competition as this World Figure Skating Championships. Helmut Seibt
Hellmut Seibt (born 25 June 1929 – 21 July 1992) was an Austrian figure skater. He was the 1952 Olympic silver medalist, 1951 World bronze medalist, a two-time European champion (1951–52), and three-time national champion. Personal life Seibt was born on 25 June 1929 in Vienna. He married figure skater Inge Regner in March 1956. He died on 21 July 1992. Career Seibt began skating at age four, having been advised to take up an outdoor activity after suffering pneumonia. He practiced at the Engelmann club in Hernals, Vienna, under the guidance of Rudolf Kutzer and Karl Schäfer. Seibt was coached by Inge Lind-Solar after World War II. He won his first national medal, silver, in 1947. In 1948, he was sent to his first European Championships, where he placed seventh, and then competed at the 1948 Winter Olympics, finishing ninth. Mollie Phillips
Mollie Doreen Phillips OBE (27 July 1907 – 15 December 1994) was a British figure skater and Olympic judge. She is regarded as a pioneer in the sport. Phillips was the first woman to carry a national flag at the opening ceremony of an Olympic Games when she led out Great Britain at the 1932 Winter Olympics. In 1961 she became High Sheriff of Carmarthenshire, the first woman to hold the title. Biography Mollie Doreen Phillips was born in London on 27 July 1907. Her father was George Phillips. She studied law at Lincoln's Inn but focussed much of her time on figure skating. In 1949 she became the Cardiganshire County Commissioner for the Girl Guides Association. She held a variety of other public appointments, including Justice of the Peace, a member of the local police authority, and a General Commissioner of Income Tax. Don Laws
Don Laws (May 30, 1929 – December 2, 2014) was an American figure skater and coach. Personal life Don Laws was born on May 30, 1929 in Washington, D.C. He had a brother, Willard Laws, and sister, Laura Keesling. In 1951, he joined the United States Army Security Agency. Laws died of heart failure on December 2, 2014 in Sandy Spring, Maryland. Career Don Laws competed in single skating and ice dancing. With his ice dancing partner, Mary Firth, he won the U.S. junior title in 1948. In men's singles, he won the 1950 U.S. junior title and placed seventh at the 1951 World Championships in Milan, Italy. He was coached by Osborne Colson. After retiring from competitive skating, Laws became a coach. His students included Scott Hamilton, Tiffany Chin, Michael Weiss, and Patrick Chan. Laws was inducted into the United States Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Professional Skaters Association Coaches Hall of Fame in 2004.
