The America Zone was one of the two regional zones of the 1951 Davis Cup. 5 teams entered the America Zone, with the winner going on to compete in the Inter-Zonal Final against the winner of the Europe Zone. The United States defeated Canada in the final, and went on to face Sweden in the Inter-Zonal Final. 1951 Davis Cup
The 1951 Davis Cup was the 40th edition of the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. 21 teams entered the Europe Zone, and 5 teams entered the America Zone. The Europe Zone began using a seeding system, where the previous year's quarterfinalists were guaranteed a bye in the first round. The United States defeated Canada in the America Zone final, and Sweden defeated West Germany in the Europe Zone final. The USA defeated Sweden in the Inter-Zonal play-off, but fell to defending champions Australia in the Challenge Round. The final was played at White City Stadium in Sydney, Australia on 26–28 December. Reynaldo Garrido
Reynaldo Garrido (born August 4, 1934) was a tennis player from Havana, Cuba. Garrido won the Canadian Open (tennis), Canadian Open in 1959. He played against his brother Orlando H. Garrido in the final of the tournament. Garrido played 5 years for the Cuba Davis Cup team. His best Grand Slam (tennis), Grand Slam performance was reaching the third round of the 1956 U.S. National Championships (tennis), 1956 U.S. National Championships. Orlando Garrido (tennis)
Orlando H. Garrido (born 1 March 1931) is a Cuban biologist and former tennis player. A native of Havana, Garrido was a University of Miami collegiate player and represented Cuba in the Davis Cup from 1950 to 1959. He featured in the singles main draw at Wimbledon five times and in 1956 made the fourth round in mixed doubles. In 1959 he was beaten by his brother Reynaldo in the singles final of the Canadian championships. Garrido, a renowned naturalist, is credited with the description of over 100 birds, insect taxa and reptiles. Henri Rochon
Henri Rochon (12 March 1924 – 5 February 2005) was a Canadian National tennis champion and Davis Cup tennis player. Born in and resident to Montreal, Rochon won the Canadian Open, the precursor to today's Rogers Cup ATP 1000 Series event, in 1949, defeating fellow Canadian Lorne Main in the final. He was also a three-time finalist, losing to American William Tully in 1948; to Canadian Brendan Macken in 1950; and to fellow Québécois Robert Bédard in 1955. Rochon appeared in U.S. National Championship fourteen consecutive times in singles, beginning in 1945. His best result came in 1951 when he reached the fourth round. Juan Weiss
Juan Weiss (died 29 October 2001) was a Cuban tennis player. Born in Sancti Spíritus, Weiss competed for Cuba in five Davis Cup ties between 1949 and 1955. He also represented his country at the 1950 Central American and Caribbean Games in Guatemala City and was a silver medalist partnering Lorenzo Nodarse in the doubles event. Weiss, who reached the third round of the 1948 U.S. National Championships, emigrated to the United States with his family in the early 1960s to escape communism. Brendan Macken (tennis)
Brendan H. Macken (21 January 1923 – 12 March 2020) was a Canadian National tennis champion and Davis Cup player. Originally from Montreal, Macken won the 1950 Canadian National Championships, in singles, by defeating defending champion Henri Rochon in the final, 6-0, 6-0, 6-3. Macken had defeated French Davis Cup players Robert Haillet and Robert Abdesselam to reach the final. Despite this convincing victory, it would be his only Canadian Open championship singles title. He also won the doubles crown twice - in 1946 with his brother Jim and in 1951 partnering Lorne Main. José Agüero is a Cuban former tennis player. Agüero had an intermittent Davis Cup career, featuring in a total of eight ties between 1935 and 1952. Lorne Main (July 9, 1930 – October 14, 2019) was a Canadian world-class amateur tennis player who competed in 11 Grand Slam tournaments in singles. Main was ranked No.1 in Canada for men's singles in 1951, 1953, and 1954. The Mount Royal Tennis Club has been the most-used venue for Canada hosting Davis Cup ties. It has been the country's most prominent grass court Davis Cup venue.
