1950 Davis Cup
The 1950 Davis Cup was the 39th edition of the most important tournament between national teams in men's tennis. 22 teams entered the Europe Zone, and 4 teams entered the America Zone. Play took place on Asian soil for the first time, when the Philippines hosted Pakistan in Manila for their first-round Europe Zone tie. Australia defeated Mexico in the America Zone final, and Sweden defeated Denmark in the Europe Zone final. Australia defeated Sweden in the Inter-Zonal play-off, and then defeated defending champions the United States in the Challenge Round. The final was played at the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, New York, United States on 25–27 August. Ken McGregor
Kenneth Bruce McGregor (2 June 1929 – 1 December 2007) was an Australian tennis player from Adelaide who won the Men's Singles title at the Australian Championships in 1952. He and his longtime doubles partner, Frank Sedgman, are generally considered one of the greatest men's doubles teams of all time and won the doubles Grand Slam in 1951. McGregor was also a member of three Australian Davis Cup winning teams in 1950–1952. In 1953, Jack Kramer induced both Sedgman and McGregor to turn professional. He was ranked as high as World No. 3 in 1952. Career In 1951 and 1952 McGregor and Frank Sedgman won seven consecutive Grand Slam doubles titles – a feat that is unmatched to this day. McGregor was also a good singles player. At the Australian Championships in 1950, McGregor beat top seed Jaroslav Drobný in an early round before losing the final against Sedgman. Armando Vega (tennis)
Armando Vega Iñiguez (born 17 August 1923) was a Mexican tennis player. Vega won Mexico's national singles championship as a 19 year old in 1942. He was a men's doubles semi-finalist with elder brother Rolando at the 1944 U.S. National Championships. From 1946 to 1951 he featured with his brother in the Mexico Davis Cup team, securing wins over Canada and Cuba. He twice pushed Australia's Frank Sedgman to five sets and beat his teammate Adrian Quist on one occasion. He was a civil engineer by profession. Orlando Garrido (tennis)
Orlando H. Garrido (born 1 March 1931) is a Cuban biologist and former tennis player. A native of Havana, Garrido was a University of Miami collegiate player and represented Cuba in the Davis Cup from 1950 to 1959. He featured in the singles main draw at Wimbledon five times and in 1956 made the fourth round in mixed doubles. In 1959 he was beaten by his brother Reynaldo in the singles final of the Canadian championships. Garrido, a renowned naturalist, is credited with the description of over 100 birds, insect taxa and reptiles. Rafael Ortega (tennis)
Rafael Ortega is a Mexican former tennis player who was active in the 1950s. Ortega appeared in two Davis Cup ties for Mexico during his career, against Cuba away in Havana in 1950, then Japan at home in Mexico City in 1954. In both 1952 and 1953, Ortega competed in the main draw of the U.S. National Championships, for two first-round losses. His first-round match against William Quillian in 1953 went to five sets. At the 1954 Central American and Caribbean Games in Mexico City he won a silver medal in the singles event, behind countryman Mario Llamas. Joffre Etcheverry
Joseph Jacques Césaire Joffre (12 January 1852 – 3 January 1931) was a French general who served as Commander-in-Chief of French forces on the Western Front from the start of World War I until the end of 1916. He is best known for regrouping the retreating allied armies to defeat the Germans at the strategically decisive First Battle of the Marne in September 1914. His political position waned after unsuccessful offensives in 1915, the German attack on Verdun in 1916, and the disappointing results of the Anglo-French offensive on the Somme in 1916. At the end of 1916 he was promoted to Marshal of France, the first such elevation under the Third Republic, and moved to an advisory role, from which he quickly resigned.
