1949 European Figure Skating Championships
The 1949 European Figure Skating Championships were held in Milan, Italy from January 28 to 30. Elite senior-level figure skaters from European ISU member nations competed for the title of European Champion in the disciplines of men's singles, ladies' singles, and pair skating. Austrian skater Eva Pawlik who had also been the best European lady skater at the 1948 European Championship won the title only in 1949, because North Americans had been admitted in 1948. So under modern rules Pawlik would have been a two-time European Champion. Alena Vrzáňová
Alena "Ája" Vrzáňová (, also Zanová, married name: Steindler; 16 May 1931 – 30 July 2015) was a Czech figure skater who represented Czechoslovakia in competition. Vrzáňová is the 1949 & 1950 World champion and 1950 European champion. Early life Vrzáňová was born in Prague, Czechoslovakia, in 1931. In addition to figure skating, she also played piano and attended ballet school. Vrzáňová started sports at the age of three when her parents bought her skis. They spent each winter in the Krkonoše mountains. After this tradition was interrupted during World War II, Vrzáňová started figure skating. The training conditions were difficult, as she had to skate in early winter mornings. Her training sessions were held in darkness because of the dim-out regulations. Valda Osborn
Valda Rosemary Foggin ( Osborn; 17 September 1934 – 28 December 2022) was a British figure skater. She was the 1953 European champion and World bronze medalist. Osborn represented her country at the 1952 Winter Olympics in Oslo, Norway, where she placed 11th. Early life Osborn was born in Wembley, Middlesex on 17 September 1934. During the Second World War, she moved to Richmond (then in Surrey), and lived close to Richmond Bridge, a short walk to Richmond Ice Rink. She had private tutors for her schooling. Career Osborn started skating, aged 2½, at Wembley Ice Rink. She was taught by Arnold Gerschwiler, who was her only coach during her entire amateur career. At age 5, Osborn won her first competition for "Under Sixes". During the Second World War, the Wembley rink was closed to save electricity. Jacqueline du Bief (born 4 December 1930) is a French retired figure skater who competed mainly in single skating. She is the 1952 Olympic bronze medalist, the 1952 World champion, a three-time European medalist, and a six-time French national champion (1947–1952). Bief was born in Paris.
