1949 Dixie Bowl
The 1949 Dixie Bowl, part of the 1948 bowl game season, took place on January 1, 1949, at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama. The competing teams were the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, representing the Southern Conference (SoCon), and the Baylor Bears, representing the Southwest Conference (SWC). Baylor was victorious in by a final score of 20–7. Teams Baylor The 1948 Baylor squad finished the regular season 5–3–2 with losses against Texas, Tulane and SMU and ties against Mississippi State and Rice. Following their tie against Rice, Dixie Bowl officials extended the Bears an invitation to play in the 1949 edition of the game, which Baylor accepted. Legion Field
Legion Field is an outdoor stadium in the southeastern United States in Birmingham, Alabama, primarily designed to be used as a venue for American football, but occasionally used for other large outdoor events. Opened in 1927, it is named in honor of the American Legion, a U.S. organization of military veterans. Since the removal of the upper deck in 2004, Legion Field has a seating capacity of approximately 71,594. At its peak, it seated 83,091 for football and had the name "Football Capital of the South" emblazoned from the facade on its upper deck. The conversion, try (American football, also known as a point(s) after touchdown, PAT, or (depending on the number of points) extra point/2-point conversion), or convert (Canadian football) occurs immediately after a touchdown during which the scoring team is allowed to attempt to score one extra point by kicking the ball through the uprights in the manner of a field goal, or two points by bringing the ball into the end zone in the manner of a touchdown. Attempts at a try or convert are scrimmage plays, with the ball initially placed at any point between the hash marks, at the option of the team making the attempt. George Sims (American Football)
George Pollard "Gabby" Sims Jr. (born October 23, 1927) is a former American football defensive back who played for the Los Angeles Rams. He played college football at Baylor University, having previously attended Seymour High School in Seymour, Texas. He is a member of the Baylor University Athletics Hall of Fame. After enlisting in the Army, Sims played for the Army's Fort Ord Warriors from fall 1951 until he mustered out in 1953. Released by the Rams and the Army to the Dallas Texans, he ended up in camp with the Baltimore Colts in 1953.
