1949 Buenos Aires Grand Prix (I)
The first of three 1949 Buenos Aires Grand Prix (motor racing), Buenos Aires Grand Prix (official name: III Gran Premio del General Juan Perón y de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires) was a Grand Prix motor racing, Grand Prix motor race that took place on January 30, 1949, at the Circuito Palermo, Palermo street circuit in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The event was marred by the death of popular French driver Jean-Pierre Wimille. He was driving his first flying lap during practice, when his car swerved to avoid children crossing the track, and slammed into a tree. He died instantly of massive head injuries. During the race, local driver Pablo Pessatti was also killed when his car overturned, and he was thrown out. Amédée Gordini
Amedeo "Amédée" Gordini (23 June 1899 – 25 May 1979) was an Italian-born race car driver and sports car manufacturer in France. Biography Gordini was born in Bazzano, currently part of the Metropolitan City of Bologna in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. He was a young boy when he became fascinated with automobiles and racing. In his early teens, he worked as a mechanic for Alfieri Maserati. After serving in the Italian army during World War I, in 1926 he married and settled in Paris, France: parenthood quickly followed. In France, he raced Fiat cars in Grand Prix motor racing events and at the 24 hours of Le Mans. He was a particular fan of the Fiat Balilla, released in early 1932. Gordini () is a division of Renault Sport Technologies (Renault Sport). In the past, it was a sports car manufacturer and performance tuner, established in 1946 by Amédée Gordini (1899–1979), nicknamed "Le Sorcier" (The Sorcerer). Gordini became a division of Renault in 1968 and of Renault Sport in 1976. History Amédée Gordini tuned cars and competed in motor races since the 1930s. His results prompted Simca (the French assembler of Fiat) to hire him for its motorsport program and to develop road cars. Their association continued after World War II.
