1948–49 Kangaroo Tour Of Great Britain And France
The 1948–49 Kangaroo tour was the seventh Kangaroo tour, in which the Australian national rugby league team travelled to Great Britain and France and played thirty-seven matches, including the Ashes series (rugby league), Ashes series of three Rugby league#Competitions, Test matches against Great Britain Lions, Great Britain, an international match against Wales national rugby league team, Wales and two Test matches against the France national rugby league team, French. It followed the tour of 1937-38 Kangaroo tour of Great Britain and France , 1937-38 and a cessation of overseas international tours due to World War II. Bill Buckley (rugby League)
William George Buckley (8 August 1906 – 17 April 1973) was an Australian rugby league footballer and administrator. Playing career A Rugby league positions#The front row, front rower, Buckley played 75 lower grade matches for Newtown Jets, Newtown. He broke his leg in the 1928 NSWRFL season and his first grade career was over. Administrative career After playing, Buckley joined the New South Wales Rugby Football League General Committee as delegate of Newtown in 1940. When NSWRFL president Jersey Flegg died in 1960, Buckley replaced him and also became Chairman of the Australian Rugby League, a position he remained in from 1960 until his death in 1973. He was replaced as NSWRFL president by Kevin Humphreys (rugby league), Kevin Humphreys. Wally O'Connell
Wally O'Connell OAM (6 April 1923 – 28 June 2017) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1940s and 1950s, and coached in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. He was a for the Australian national team. He played in ten Tests between 1948 and 1951 as captain on one occasion. Wally's younger brother Barry also played first grade football for Easts and Manly. Playing career Eastern Suburbs An Eastern Suburbs junior, O'Connell's NSWRFL first grade career commenced in 1942 with the Eastern Suburbs club with whom he spent seven seasons and played 80 games. Dapto Canaries
The Dapto Canaries are an Australian rugby league football team based in the Wollongong suburb of Dapto. The club are a part of Country Rugby League and have competed in the Illawarra Rugby League premiership since its inception in 1911. History, colours and emblem The Dapto Canaries were established in 1911 and are one of five founding clubs of the Illawarra Rugby League. However, it took the Canaries many decades to win their first title in 1966, and they have been strong competitors ever since. The Canaries won four premierships in five years during the 1970s, and a further three in each of the 80s and 90s. They won another three consecutive premierships between 2000 and 2002, with their final premiership in 2006. Bobby Dimond
Robert Henry Dimond (30 July 1930 – 30 May 2020) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1940s and 1950s. He was selected to play for Australia and was a member of the 1948 Kangaroo Tour. He played 20 matches on the tour and scored ten tries, but did not play in a test match. He died in Mexico due to prolonged illness. Playing career Born in Dapto, New South Wales, he is the older brother of Peter Dimond. He made his first grade debut at the age of sixteen. Balmain Tigers
The Balmain Tigers (also known as the Sydney Tigers from 1995–96) are a rugby league club based in the inner-western Sydney suburb of Balmain. They were a founding member of the New South Wales Rugby League and one of the most successful in the history of the premiership, with eleven titles. In 1999 they formed a joint venture club with the Western Suburbs Magpies club to form the Wests Tigers for competition in the National Rugby League (NRL). Fred De Belin
Fred de Belin (15 October 1920 – 11 February 2006) was an Australian professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1940s and an RAAF Flying Officer who saw active service over Germany during WWII. An Australian international and New South Wales interstate representative forward, he played club football in Sydney for Balmain, winning the 1946 NSWRFL Premiership with them and later being appointed their captain. Background De Belin's father Ernest Hector Fred de Belin (1896-1971) lived in Glebe, Sydney when he enlisted in 1916 then three months shy of his twentieth birthday, as reserve for the 1st Battalion AIF. He served on the Western Front as a machine gunner and saw action at Bullecourt and Ypres. He was wounded three times but returned to the front line. Les Cowie
Leslie Gordon Cowie (17 May 1925 – 20 May 1995) was an Australian rugby league footballer, a fine for the champion South Sydney Rabbitohs teams of the 1950s and an Australia national rugby league team, Australia national representative. The Sydney Roosters are an Australian professional Rugby league, Rugby League Football Club based in the Eastern Suburbs (Sydney) and parts of inner Sydney. Vic Bulgin
Victor John Bulgin (8 November 1927 – 19 January 2007) was an Australian rugby league footballer who played in the 1940s and 50s. An Australia national and New South Wales state representative , he played for Sydney's Eastern Suburbs and Canterbury-Bankstown clubs. Bulgin also represented his country as an amateur golfer. Rugby League career Bulgin, a fullback, began his career with the Eastern Suburbs club as a 19-year-old in 1947.
