	1948–49 Huddersfield Town A.F.C. Season Huddersfield Town's 1948–49 campaign is referred to in Town folklore as the original "Great Escape" season (the second being 1997–98 Huddersfield Town A.F.C. season, the 1997–98 season), when Arnold Rodgers scored the goal that saw Town maintain their Football League First Division, 1st Division status. His goal against Manchester City F.C., Manchester City, with 10 minutes of the last match of the season remaining saw Town keep their status and relegate Preston North End F.C., Preston North End and Sheffield United F.C., Sheffield United in the process. 	Vic Metcalfe Victor Metcalfe (3 February 1922 – 6 April 2003) was a professional footballer who was born in Barrow-in-Furness where his father played rugby league for Barrow. Life and career Metcalfe was though a product of West Riding schools football and joined Huddersfield Town from Ravensthorpe BC as an amateur in June 1940. He was immediately put into the first team, then playing in the Wartime League North-East Division. After service as a wireless operator in the RAF he signed as a professional in December 1945 and was a regular in the first team until leaving for Hull City in June 1958.
