1948–49 Huddersfield Town A.F.C. Season
Huddersfield Town's 1948–49 campaign is referred to in Town folklore as the original "Great Escape" season (the second being 1997–98 Huddersfield Town A.F.C. season, the 1997–98 season), when Arnold Rodgers scored the goal that saw Town maintain their Football League First Division, 1st Division status. His goal against Manchester City F.C., Manchester City, with 10 minutes of the last match of the season remaining saw Town keep their status and relegate Preston North End F.C., Preston North End and Sheffield United F.C., Sheffield United in the process. Huddersfield Town F
Huddersfield is a market town in the Kirklees district in West Yorkshire, England. It is the administrative centre and largest settlement in the Kirklees district. The town is in the foothills of the Pennines. The River Holme's confluence into the similar-sized Colne to the south of the town centre which then flows into the Calder in the north eastern outskirts of the town. Vic Metcalfe
Victor Metcalfe (3 February 1922 – 6 April 2003) was a professional footballer who was born in Barrow-in-Furness where his father played rugby league for Barrow. Life and career Metcalfe was though a product of West Riding schools football and joined Huddersfield Town from Ravensthorpe BC as an amateur in June 1940. He was immediately put into the first team, then playing in the Wartime League North-East Division. After service as a wireless operator in the RAF he signed as a professional in December 1945 and was a regular in the first team until leaving for Hull City in June 1958. He had made a total of 459 first team appearances and scored 90 goals. He played a few times for Hull in their promotion season 1958–59 and retired on his 38th birthday in February 1960. William Edward Hayes (7 November 1915 in Cork, Ireland – 22 April 1987) was an Irish footballer who played for Huddersfield Town, Cork United and Burnley. As an international, Hayes played for both Ireland teams – the FAI XI and the IFA XI. Like fellow dual international, Billy Walsh, he also represented England Schoolboys. Edmund Boot (13 October 1915 – 1999) was an English professional footballer who played in the Football League as a left half for Sheffield United and Huddersfield Town. He went on to become manager of Huddersfield Town. Boot was born in Laughton Common, near Rotherham. He played non-league football for Aughton and Denaby United before joining Sheffield United in 1934.
