1948–49 Anderson Duffey Packers Season
The 1948–49 Anderson Duffey Packers season was the Packers' third year in the United States' National Basketball League (NBL), which was also the twelfth and final year the league existed. Ten teams competed in the NBL in 1948–49, comprising five teams in both the Eastern and Western Divisions. The Anderson Duffey Packers played their home games at Anderson High School Wigwam. The Packers finished in first place in the Eastern Division. In the first series of the NBL playoffs, Anderson received an automatic bye. In the Eastern semifinals (the Packers' first round) they defeated the Syracuse Nationals three games to one (3–1). They then went on to win their first league championship 3–0 over Western Division champion Oshkosh All-Stars. Murray Mendenhall
Murray Joseph Mendenhall (March 5, 1898 – July 27, 1972) was an American basketball coach. Murray began coaching at the high school level, at New Castle in 1923, before moving to Ft. Wayne Central the following year, coaching the Tigers to the state championship in 1943. Jack Walton (basketball)
Jack D. Walton (May 19, 1926 – December 17, 1952) was an American professional basketball player. He played in the National Basketball League for the Anderson Duffey Packers during the 1948–49 season and averaged 1.8 points per game. He also competed in independent leagues. In 1949, Walton took a job with a construction company. Three years later, he was accidentally killed on a construction site when a tree being uprooted by a bulldozer fell on him.
