1948 Stanley Cup Finals
The 1948 Stanley Cup Finals was a best-of-seven series between the Detroit Red Wings and the defending champion Toronto Maple Leafs. The Maple Leafs won the series in four straight games to win their second consecutive Stanley Cup. Paths to the Finals Detroit defeated the New York Rangers 4–2 to advance to the Finals. Toronto defeated the Boston Bruins 4–1 to advance to the Finals. Ted Lindsay
Ted Lindsay (born Robert Blake Theodore Lindsay; July 29, 1925 – March 4, 2019) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played as a forward for the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Black Hawks of the National Hockey League (NHL). Lindsay scored over 800 points in his Hockey Hall of Fame career, won the Art Ross Trophy in 1950, and won the Stanley Cup four times. Often referred to as "Terrible Ted", Lindsay helped to organize the first attempt at a Players' Association in the late 1950s, an action which led to his trade to Chicago. In 2017, Lindsay was named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players in history. Playing career Lindsay was born in Renfrew, Ontario. Pete Horeck
Peter "Pistol Pete" Horeck (June 15, 1923 — August 29, 2009) was a Canadian professional ice hockey player who played in the National Hockey League for the Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings, and Boston Bruins between 1944 and 1952. Early life Horeck was born and raised in Massey, Ontario, a small town located about 100 km southwest from Sudbury, Ontario. He was one of eight boys in his family. He took up the sport of hockey in the town. Career Pre NHL Horeck left his hometown to play for the Parry Sound Pilots along with Doug Orr, the father of Bobby Orr. After his tenure in Parry Sound, He played one year in the Eastern Hockey League and four years in the American Hockey League. Jim Conacher
James Conacher (May 5, 1921 – April 9, 2020) was a Scottish-born Canadian ice hockey forward. He played in the National Hockey League with the Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Black Hawks, and New York Rangers between 1945 and 1952. Conacher was born in Motherwell, Scotland, United Kingdom and raised in Toronto, Ontario. Life and career Conacher started his National Hockey League career with the Detroit Red Wings. He went on to play with the New York Rangers and Chicago Black Hawks. Conacher recorded 85 goals and 117 assists for 202 points in 328 career NHL games. After his hockey career, he worked as an advertising salesman for newspaper companies in Toronto. After Chick Webster's death in January 2018, he became the oldest living former NHL player. Howie Meeker
Howard William Meeker (November 4, 1923 – November 8, 2020) was a Canadian professional hockey player in the National Hockey League, youth coach and educator in ice hockey, and a Progressive Conservative Member of Parliament. He became best known to Canadians as an excitable and enthusiastic television colour commentator for Hockey Night in Canada, breaking down strategy in between periods of games with early use of the telestrator. In the NHL, he won the Calder Memorial Trophy as best rookie, is one of the few professional players to score five goals in a game, and won four Stanley Cups, all with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was given the Order of Canada, and is in the Ontario Sports Hall of Fame, and the Hockey Hall of Fame as a broadcaster. James Angus Gerald "Old Hardrock" Mortson (January 24, 1925 – August 8, 2015) was a Canadian ice hockey defenceman in the National Hockey League (NHL). He played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, Chicago Black Hawks, and Detroit Red Wings, winning four Stanley Cups with Toronto. He also played in eight NHL All Star Games. Joe Klukay
Joseph Francis Klukay a.k.a. "The Duke of Padocah" (November 6, 1922 – February 3, 2006) was a professional Canadian ice hockey forward. He was born in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Klukay began his National Hockey League career with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1943. He also played for the Boston Bruins. He left the NHL following the 1956 season and played several more years in the Ontario Senior Hockey League with the Windsor Bulldogs before retiring from hockey altogether in 1964. In his career, he won 4 Stanley Cups and 1 Allan Cup. Klukay was the first Sault Ste. Jim McFadden
James Alexander McFadden (April 15, 1920 – August 22, 2002) was a professional ice hockey forward. He was born in Belfast, United Kingdom and raised in Miami, Manitoba, in the Opawaka district. One of six players born in Ireland to play in the National Hockey League, McFadden played for the Detroit Red Wings and Chicago Black Hawks between 1947 and 1954, as well as several years in different minor leagues. He is the uncle of Bill Mikkelson, and the great uncle of Bill's son, Brendan. Playing career McFadden started his career with the Portland Buckaroos of the Pacific Coast Hockey League. Detroit Olympia, also known as Olympia Stadium, was a multi-purpose arena in Detroit. Nicknamed "The Old Red Barn", it was best known as the home of the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League (NHL) from its opening in 1927 to 1979. The Stanley Cup (french: La Coupe Stanley) is the championship trophy awarded annually to the National Hockey League (NHL) playoff champion. It is the oldest existing trophy to be awarded to a professional sports franchise in North America, and the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) considers it to be one of the "most important championships available to the sport". The trophy was commissioned in 1892 as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup and is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor General of Canada, who donated it as an award to Canada's top-ranking amateur ice hockey club.
