1948 Singaporean General Election
General elections were held for the first time in Singapore on 20 March 1948, when six of the 22 seats on the Legislative Council became directly-elected. Voting was not compulsory and was restricted to British subjects, who constituted around 2% of the 940,000 population. Although various organisations called for a boycott of the elections, voter turnout was 63.1%. The Progressive Party (PP) was the only contesting party, winning three of the six elected seats. Background The election was announced on 1 February, and nominations were due by 16 February. The campaign period lasted for 31 days. Polling was scheduled on 20 March 1948 and the First Legislative Council had its first session on 1 April 1948. The Legislative Council of the Colony of Singapore was the legislative council of Singapore that assisted the governor in making laws in the colony. It officially came into existence in 1946, when the Straits Settlements (Repeal) Act 1946 abolished the Straits Settlements, and made Singapore a Crown colony that would need its own legislative council. Tan Chin Tuan (; 21 November 1908 – 13 November 2005) was a Peranakan banker and philanthropist often credited with helping to establish the OCBC Bank. Biography Early life Born in 1908, he was the son of prominent Hokkien businessman, Tan Cheng Siong, a General Manager of Oversea-Chinese Bank Ltd. Tan Chin Tuan grew up under the harsh conditions of the Great Depression (1930), having lost his father during his schooling years. Educated at Anglo-Chinese School, he was compelled to leave school at the age of seventeen to begin work at the Chinese Commercial Bank (which merged with Ho Hong Bank that same year to form OCBC). Career Tan served as the managing director of OCBC from 1942 to 1972 and as chairman from 1966 to 1983. Sahayaseeli Pedhuruppillai, alias Malathi (or Malathy), is the first female fighter of the Tamil Tigers to die in combat, hence revered as the first female martyr. Her death anniversary is commemorated as ''Women's Awakening day''. Her death is significant as later females joined the Tamil Tigers at all levels and played significant roles (including the Black Tigers). Tun Sardon bin Jubir ( ms, سعدون بن زبير, label= Jawi, script=arab, italic=unset; 19 March 1917 – 14 December 1985) was a Malaysian politician. He served as Minister of Health, Minister of Works and Communications and was the Yang di-Pertua Negeri (Governor) of Penang from 1975 to 1981.
