The 1947–48 Boston Celtics season was the second season of the Boston Celtics in the Basketball Association of America (BAA/NBA). This was the first season in which the Celtics qualified for the playoffs, where they lost in the BAA Quarterfinals to the Chicago Stags. John Russell (basketball)
John David "Honey" Russell (May 31, 1902 – November 15, 1973) was an American basketball player and coach who was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1964. He turned professional after his sophomore year of high school, and for the next 28 years he played for numerous early 20th century pro teams, including many in the American Basketball League. His career included over 3,200 pro games (a number that would take a modern NBA player 30–40 years to equal). He was the first coach of the NBA's Boston Celtics (1946–1948). Russell coached basketball at Seton Hall University from 1936 to 1943 and again from 1949 to 1960. His teams won 294 games and lost 137. In 1940 and 1941, Seton Hall ran its winning streak to 43 games, a national record at the time. The 1952–53 team won the National Invitation Tournament at Madison Square Garden in New York City. 1947–48 Providence Steamrollers Season
The 1947–48 Providence Steamrollers season was the second season of the Providence Steamrollers. This season is also infamous for the lowest amount of wins by a team in BAA/NBA history with only 6 total wins recorded by the Steamrollers throughout this entire season. The only other NBA teams to end their seasons with single-digit victories as of 2023 are the 1972–73 Philadelphia 76ers, the 1998–99 Vancouver Grizzlies, the 1998–99 Los Angeles Clippers, and the 2011–12 Charlotte Bobcats, who hold the worst win percentage in NBA history. 1947–48 New York Knicks Season
The 1947–48 New York Knicks season was the second season for the team in the Basketball Association of America (BAA), which later merged with the National Basketball League to become the National Basketball Association. The Knicks finished in second place in the Eastern Division with a 26–22 record and qualified for the BAA Playoffs. In the first round, New York was eliminated by the Baltimore Bullets in a best-of-three series, two games to one. Carl Braun was the team's scoring leader during the season. At the 1947 BAA draft, the Knicks selected Dick Holub in the first round, with the fifth overall pick. The Knicks also selected Wataru Misaka, who made the team's final roster and became "the first person of color to play in modern professional basketball", just months after the Major League Baseball color line had been broken by the Brooklyn Dodgers' Jackie Robinson. Danny Silva (baseball)
Daniel James Silva (October 5, 1896 – April 4, 1974) was an American professional baseball third-baseman. He played one game in Major League Baseball for the Washington Senators in . He was an assistant coach of the Boston Celtics, and was the first modern-era commissioner of the Cape Cod Baseball League. Biography A native of Everett, Massachusetts, Silva attended Muhlenberg College and served in World War I. Returning home from war, Silva pursued a career in professional baseball. He appeared in a single game at the major league level for the 1919 Washington Senators. On August 11 of that season, he played third base for the Senators at Griffith Stadium. The Senators' lineup that day featured Baseball Hall of Fame outfielder Sam Rice, and saw the team's Hall of Fame hurler Walter Johnson used as a late-inning pinch hitter.
