1947 Wellington City Mayoral Election
The 1947 Wellington City mayoral election was part of the New Zealand local elections held that same year. In 1947, election were held for the Mayor of Wellington plus other local government positions including fifteen city councillors. The polling was conducted using the standard first-past-the-post electoral method. Background The Citizens' Association reselected the incumbent mayor Will Appleton. He had been mayor for three years and a councillor for thirteen years prior. He had been chairman of the works committee since 1933. All eleven Citizens' councillors who were not retiring were reselected. The Labour Party almost decided not to contest the mayoralty. When the Wellington Labour Representation Committee met to discuss the municipal elections a motion to put up a mayoral candidate was carried by only thirty-seven votes to thirty-five. Will Appleton
Sir William Appleton (3 September 1889 – 22 October 1958) was a New Zealand local body politician, advertising agent and leading company director. He was Mayor of Wellington for two terms from 1944 to 1950 after serving as a city councillor from 1931 to 1944. He was knighted in 1950. Biography Early life and career Appleton was born in Alexandra in Central Otago in 1889, the eldest of nine children. His parents were Yorkshireman Edwin Appleton and his Scottish wife, Margaret Bruce. The Appleton family briefly moved to Gisborne in 1904 but was back in Alexandra in the following year. Appleton, left by the postmaster in charge of the local post office as a teenager, did some bookkeeping for local businesses. Frederick Furkert
Frederick William Furkert (14 October 1876 – 26 September 1949) was a New Zealand engineer. He joined the Public Works Department (PWD) in 1894, and was engineer-in-chief of the PWD for twelve years from 1920 until he retired in 1933. Furkert was born in Ross, Westland in 1876. The projects he was responsible for included the New Zealand Railways Department the North Island Main Trunk Railway (completed 1908), the Otira Tunnel (completed 1923) and the Tawa Flat deviation (completed 1935). He was also responsible for hydroelectric dam projects like the Waitaki Dam (completed 1935). He worked with the Standards Institute on the draughting of building bylaws. In the 1926 New Year Honours, Furkert was appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George. He was a Wellington City Councillor when he died. Frank O'Flynn
Francis Duncan O'Flynn (24 October 1918 – 17 October 2003) was a New Zealand politician of the Labour Party. Biography O'Flynn was born in Runanga in 1918. He was the son of Francis Edward O'Flynn and Margaret Helen Valentine Duncan. He received his education at Christchurch Normal School and Christchurch Boys' High School. He received his BA in 1940, and joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force in 1942. He married Sylvia Elizabeth Hefford in 1942 and they had four children. He obtained his LLB in 1947 and LLM in 1948. At the 1947, 1950 and 1953 local-body elections he was stood unsuccessfully for the Wellington City Council on the Labour Party ticket. Phil Holloway
Philip North Holloway (22 March 1917 – 28 May 2003) was a New Zealand politician of the Labour Party. Biography Early life and career Holloway was born in Hokitika in 1917. His father was an Anglican parson and he received his secondary education at Waitaki Boys' High School. He attended the University of Otago, but did not finish his degree because he went overseas in 1936. He was a door-to-door salesmen for vacuum cleaners in England before undertaking more study at Boston University. He then became a public circuit lecturer in the United States before returning to London and briefly became an assistant to prominent Labour MP Sir Stafford Cripps from 1938 to 1939. James Roberts (21 February 1878 – 4 February 1967) was a New Zealand trade unionist, politician and was president of the Labour Party from 1937 to 1950. He was called 'Big Jim' and 'the uncrowned King of New Zealand' in recognition of the considerable influence he wielded during the period of the First Labour Government over policy creation and implementation. Early life Roberts was born in Lissangle, County Cork, Ireland, in 1878 and arrived in New Zealand in 1901 or 1902. His first years in New Zealand were spent struggling to find stable employment before eventually finding a job with the Wellington Gas Company. John Gibbs Churchill (7 February 1905–2 December 1975) was a New Zealand trade unionist and local politician. For six years he was the mayor of Otaki. Biography Early life and career Churchill was born 7 February 1905 in Wellington. He was educated at Terrace School and then Wellington College. In 1929 he married Hilda Kate Barley. That same year he entered employment with the New Zealand Post Office as a Mechanician. He rose to become a Senior Mechanician and then a Departmental Welfare Officer. Eugene Casey
Eugene Casey (30 November 1885 - 6 October 1960) was the General Manager of New Zealand Railways Department from 1940 to 1944. Biography Casey was born in London on 30 November 1885, moving to New Zealand as a child. He was educated at a Marist Brothers College and then Auckland University College. He was also an associate member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (AMICE). In 1902 he joined the New Zealand Railways Department as an engineering cadet and was stationed in multiple locations including Greymouth, Wanganui, Auckland and Ohakune. In 1912 he became the assistant engineer for Auckland District. He was then posted to Canterbury in 1921 where he remodeled the station yards on the Midland Line.
