1946–47 New Caledonian Legislative Election
Legislative elections were held in New Caledonia on 22 December 1946 and 5 January 1947 to elect the 19 elected members of the General Council. The elections saw the left-wing members elected in 1945 largely replaced by members representing business and the mining industry. The new Council elected Henri Lafleur as the territory's representative to the French Council of the Republic. Henri Lafleur
Henri Lafleur (1902 – 1974) was a New Caledonian politician. A member of the Senate of France from 1959 until 1974, he sat as an Independent Republican. He was elected to the General Assembly in the 1946–47 elections, and was subsequently elected as the New Caledonian member of the Council of the Republic. He did not contest the 1953 elections, but was re-elected to the renamed Territorial Assembly in 1957. He was forced to resign from the Assembly when he was elected to the Senate in 1959, but returned to the island legislature again after being elected in 1962. Council Of The Republic (France)
The Council of the Republic (french: Conseil de la République) was the upper house of the French parliament under the Fourth Republic, with the National Assembly being the lower house. It was established by the Constitution of 1946, dissolved by the Constitution of 1958 and replaced with the Senate. History The constitution of the Fourth Republic, which came into force in 1946, stipulated that parliament was bicameral. The upper house was named the "Council of the Republic" (as opposed to the Senate of the Third Republic) and was granted greatly diminished powers. Role The council did not have the power to make laws, which was the responsibility of the National Assembly. The council was mainly consultative, and bills were only given a single reading at the council before being passed. Henri Bonneaud (1907 – 2 March 1957) was a New Caledonian businessman and politician.
