The 1946 Wimbledon Championships took place on the outdoor grass courts at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom. The tournament was held from Monday 24 June until Saturday 6 July 1946. It was the 60th staging of the Wimbledon Championships and the first one held after a six-year break due to World War II. In 1946 and 1947 Wimbledon was held before the French Championships and was thus the second Grand Slam tennis event of the year. The Wimbledon Championships would take place every year until 2019, a span of 74 consecutive years before the event would be cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Wimbledon, London
Wimbledon () is a district and town of Southwest London, England, southwest of the centre of London at Charing Cross; it is the main commercial centre of the London Borough of Merton. Wimbledon had a population of 68,187 in 2011 which includes the electoral wards of Abbey, Dundonald, Hillside, Trinity, Village, Raynes Park and Wimbledon Park. It is home to the Wimbledon Championships and New Wimbledon Theatre, and contains Wimbledon Common, one of the largest areas of common land in London. 2020 Wimbledon Championships
The 2020 Wimbledon Championships was a cancelled Grand Slam tennis tournament scheduled to be played at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, United Kingdom, between Monday 29 June 2020 and Sunday 12 July 2020. It was never played because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The cancellation of the tournament was announced on 1 April 2020. This was the first time since World War II that the Wimbledon Championships have been cancelled. Cancellation and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic The All England Club exercised an insurance plan covering infectious diseases, reportedly claiming over £100 million for the cancellation. £10m was distributed to the 620 players whose rankings would have been high enough for them to enter the tournament had it taken place. The 1946 French Championships (now known as the French Open) was a tennis tournament that took place on the outdoor clay courts at the Stade Roland-Garros in Paris, France. The tournament ran from 18 July until 28 July. It was the 50th staging of the French Championships and the first one held after a six-year hiatus due to World War II. The 1946 Australian Championships was a tennis tournament that took place on outdoor grass courts at the Memorial Drive, Adelaide, Australia from 19 January to 29 January. It was the 34th edition of the Australian Championships (now known as the Australian Open), the 8th held in Adelaide, and the first Grand Slam tournament of the year. Dorothy Cheney
Dorothy "Dodo" May Sutton Bundy Cheney (September 1, 1916 – November 23, 2014) was an American tennis player from her youth into her 90s. In 1938, Bundy was the first American to win the women's singles title at the Australian National Championships, defeating Dorothy Stevenson in the final. Personal life Cheney was born in Los Angeles, the daughter of Tennis Hall of Famer May Sutton Bundy (1886–1975) and U.S. men's doubles champion Tom Bundy (1881–1945). She was the grandmother of former Major League Baseball player Danny Putnam. Cheney died on November 23, 2014, in Escondido, California at the age of 98. Tennis career According to A. Doris Hart
Doris Hart (June 20, 1925 – May 29, 2015) was an American tennis player from who was active in the 1940s and first half of the 1950s. She was ranked world No. 1 in 1951. She was the fourth player, and second woman, to win a Career Grand Slam in singles. She was the first of only three players (all women) to complete the career "Boxed Set" of Grand Slam titles, which is winning at least one title in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles at all four Grand Slam events. Only she and Margaret Court achieved this during the amateur era of the sport. Hart played collegiate tennis for the Miami Hurricanes at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida. Dinny Pails
Dennis "Dinny" Pails (4 March 1921 – 22 November 1986) was an Australian tennis champion. Pails was born in England, but moved to Australia in 1922 at age 1. Pails won the men's singles championship at the Australian Championships in 1947. Pails defeated John Bromwich in the final in five sets: 4–6, 6–4, 3–6, 7–5, 8–6, saving a match point in the process. Pails played eight Davis Cup matches between 1946 and 1947, winning three matches and losing five. Pails turned professional at the end of 1947. He played on the pro tour off and on for many years. Bud Collins ranked him the World No. 4 pro in 1948, and Pails reached as high as World No. 6 in the 1947 amateur rankings.
