1946 South American Championship
The nineteenth edition of the South American Championship in football was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 12 January to 10 February. This tournament, an ''extra'' edition with no trophy handed to the winners, is considered official by CONMEBOL. The participating countries were Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru withdrew from the tournament. Estudiantes De La Plata
Club Estudiantes de La Plata ( lit. "Students from La Plata"), simply referred to as Estudiantes de La Plata , is an Argentine professional sports club based in La Plata. The club's football team currently competes in the Primera División, where it has spent most of its history. The club is a successful team in Argentina. In 1967, Estudiantes was the first team outside the traditional " big five" to win a professional league title. It has won four additional league titles and has had greater international success, having won six international titles. Estudiantes' international title championships are four Copa Libertadores (including three straight from 1968 to 1970), an Intercontinental Cup, and an Interamerican Cup. The club was founded in 1905 when a group of players and fans decided to break away from Gimnasia de La Plata, which favored indoor sport rather than football. Ezra Sued
Ezra Sued (7 June 1923 – 21 August 2011) was an Argentine international football striker. Career Born in Once, Buenos Aires, Sued began playing club football for local side Racing Club de Avellaneda. He spent his entire professional career with the club, playing from 1943 until 1954 and winning the Argentine championship three times. He played in 308 matches and scored 47 goals for the club. Sued made six appearances and scored two goals for the Argentina national football team, appearing in the 1946 and 1947 It was the first year of the Cold War, which would last until 1991, ending with the dissolution of the Soviet Union. León Strembel
León Strembel is an Argentine retired football midfielder. Strembel began his career with Club Atlético Lanús in 1939. He played for the club through 1944, then he joined Racing Club de Avellaneda from 1945 to 1946. He also played for the Argentina national football team, appearing in the South American Championship 1946. In 1947 he joined Club Atlético Atlanta along with other prominent players such as José Soriano and Adolfo Pedernera Adolfo Alfredo Pedernera (15 November 1918 – 12 May 1995) was an Argentine football player and coach. José Salomón (9 July 1916 in La Plata – 22 January 1990) was an Argentine football defender who played club football for Talleres de Remedios de Escalada and Racing Club de Avellaneda and captained the Argentina national football team. Salomón started his career in 1934 with Talleres before moving to Avellaneda to play for Racing Club between 1939 and 1945. Salomón played a total of 44 games for Argentina including 21 in the Copa América a national record he shares with Oscar Ruggeri. René Pontoni
René Alejandro Pontoni (born May 18, 1920, in Santa Fe, Argentina, died May 14, 1983) was a footballer. He played club football in Argentina, Colombia and Brazil as well as representing the Argentina national football team on 19 occasions. Biography Pontoni started his career with Gimnasia y Esgrima de Santa Fe before joining Newell's Old Boys in 1940. Pontoni made his debut for the Argentina national team in 1942. He went on to score 19 goals in 19 games for his country, helping them to become South American champions in 1945, 1946 and 1947. In 1944 Pontoni joined San Lorenzo where he helped the team to win the Primera División in 1946. In 1948 he suffered a career threatening injury but he recovered, moving to Colombia in 1949 to play for Independiente Santa Fe where he remained until 1952. In 1953 Pontoni moved to Brazil, where he spent one season with Portuguesa in São Paulo before returning to Argentina for one last season with San Lorenzo in 1954. Titles Later y ...
