1946 Corowa State By-election
A by-election was held for the New South Wales Legislative Assembly electorate of Corowa on 9 November 1946 because of the resignation of Christopher Lethbridge (), to contest the federal seat of Riverina at the 1946 election as a Liberal candidate, however he was unsuccessful. Lethbridge then nominated as a candidate to regain the seat. The by-elections for Albury, Auburn and Ashfield were held on the same day. New South Wales Legislative Assembly
The New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the lower of the two houses of the Parliament of New South Wales, an Australian state. The upper house is the New South Wales Legislative Council. Both the Assembly and Council sit at Parliament House in the state capital, Sydney. The Assembly is presided over by the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly. The Assembly has 93 members, elected by single-member constituency, which are commonly known as seats. Voting is by the optional preferential system. Members of the Legislative Assembly have the post-nominals MP after their names. From the creation of the assembly up to about 1990, the post-nominals "MLA" (Member of the Legislative Assembly) were used. Ebenezer Kendell
Ebenezer Thomas Kendell (31 May 1886 – 7 April 1966) was an Australian politician and a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly from 1946 until 1950. He was a member of the Country Party. Early life Kendell was born at Miniacowie near Minalton on the Yorke Peninsula, South Australia. He was the son of a farmer and was educated to elementary level. He became a wheat farmer in the Wimmera district of Victoria and served in the First Australian Imperial Force in the Middle East and France in World War One. Following repatriation, he was one of a 100 Australian farmers chosen to study irrigation and wheat growing at the University of California. He moved from the Wimmera to Lockhart, New South Wales in 1927 and became active in community organizations including the Farmers and Settlers Association, the Returned and Services League of Australia, the Australian Wheat Growers Association, the Hospital Board and the Show Society. The Speaker of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly is the presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly, New South Wales's lower chamber of Parliament. The current Speaker is Jonathan O'Dea, who was elected on 7 May 2019. Traditionally a partisan office, filled by the governing party of the time, O'Dea replaced the previous Liberal Speaker Shelley Hancock, following the 2019 state election. Electoral District Of Corowa
Corowa was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of the Australian state of New South Wales, taking its name from town of Corowa on the Murray River. History The district was created in the 1904 re-distribution of electorates following the 1903 New South Wales referendum, which required the number of members of the Legislative Assembly to be reduced from 125 to 90. It consisted of parts of Albury, The Murray and the abolished seat of The Hume. It moved west in 1913, absorbing the eastern part of the abolished district of Deniliquin and losing its eastern part to the districts of Albury and Wagga Wagga. In 1920, with the introduction of proportional representation, Corowa, Albury and Wagga Wagga were absorbed into Murray and elected four members.
