1945 Personnel Distribution Command Comets Football Team
The 1945 Personnel Distribution Command Comets football team represented the Personnel Distribution Command (PDC) based in Greensboro, North Carolina and Louisville, Kentucky during the 1945 college football season. The Comets competed in the Army Air Forces League (AAF League) with six others teams from the United States Army Air Forces. The team compiled an overall record of 6–5 with a mark of 2–4 in league play, placing sixth in the AAF League. The Comets began the season with Captain Ted Shipkey as head coach. In October, after the team's first three games, Shipkey was discharged from military service and returned to the University of New Mexico, where he had been head football coach before World War II. The 1945 First Air Force Aces football team represented the First Air Force based at Mitchel Field during the 1945 college football season. The Aces competed in the Army Air Forces League (AAF League) with six others teams from the United States Army Air Forces. Led by head coach Jesse Yarborough, the Aces compiled an overall record of 3–2–3 with a mark of 2–2–2 in league play, placing fourth in the AAF League. Major Yarborough's coaching staff consisted of Lieutenant Clyde Crabtree as backfield coach, Staff Sergeant George Platukis as line coach, and Lieutenant Art White as ends coach. Michie Stadium
Michie Stadium is an outdoor football stadium on the campus of the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York. The home field for the Army Black Knights, it opened in 1924 and has a current seating capacity of 38,000. The stadium sits at the upper portion of campus, directly west of Lusk Reservoir. The 1945 Army Cadets football team was an American football powerhouse that represented the United States Military Academy as an independent and considered to be among the greatest in collegiate history. In their fifth season under head coach Earl "Red" Blaik, the Cadets compiled a 9–0 record, shut out five of nine opponents (including a 48–0 victory over No. 2 Notre Dame and a 61–0 victory over No. 6 Penn), and outscored all opponents by a total of 412 to 46. Phillips Field was a medium-sized stadium (maximum capacity approximately 20,000) located on the west bank of the Hillsborough River across from downtown Tampa, immediately adjacent to the University of Tampa.
