1945 Fresno State Bulldogs Football Team
The 1945 Fresno State Bulldogs football team represented Fresno State Normal School—now known as California State University, Fresno—during the 1945 college football season. Fresno State competed in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). However, due to the impact of World War II, the Bulldogs only played one conference game in 1945. There was no conference champion crowned in 1945. Since some colleges were still not playing football in 1945, the Bulldogs played the College of Pacific twice and Cal Poly twice. The team was led by first-year head coach Alvin Pierson and played home games at Ratcliffe Stadium on the campus of Fresno City College in Fresno, California. They finished the season with a record of four wins, six losses and two ties (4–6–2, 0–1 CCAA). The California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) is a college athletic conference affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level. All of its current members are public universities, and upon UC San Diego's departure on July 1, 2020, all are members of the California State University system (two of them being Cal Polys). Marysville is a city and the county seat of Yuba County, California, located in the Gold Country region of Northern California. 1945 Saint Mary's Gaels Football Team
The 1945 Saint Mary's Gaels football team was an American football team that represented Saint Mary's College of California during the 1945 college football season. In their fourth season under head coach and College Football Hall of Fame inductee James Phelan, the Gaels compiled a 7–2 record, outscored their opponents by a combined total of 282 to 65, and were ranked No. 7 in the final AP Poll. The Gaels' victories included a 20–13 besting of California and a 26–0 victory over USC. Their only loss during the regular season was to UCLA by a 13–7 score. The Gaels were invited to play in the 1946 Sugar Bowl where they lost to an undefeated No. 5-ranked Oklahoma A&M by a 33–13 score. The Fresno State–San Diego State football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Fresno State Bulldogs football team of California State University, Fresno and San Diego State Aztecs football team of San Diego State University.
