1944 German Football Championship
The 1944 German football championship, the 37th edition of the competition, was won by Dresdner SC, the club defending its 1943 title by defeating ''Luftwaffe'' team LSV Hamburg in the final. The final years of the German Championship during the war saw many military teams compete in the championship, ''Luftwaffe'' teams, ''Luftwaffensportvereine'', short ''LSV'', and, ''Wehrmacht'' teams, ''Wehrmachtssportvereine'', short ''WSV'', became very competitive. Dresden's Helmut Schön, who would later coach Germany to the 1974 FIFA World Cup, became the top scorer of the 1944 championship with 14 goals, the second-highest individual amount of any player in the history of the competition from 1903 to 1963. It was the last edition of the tournament during the Second World War, with the competition not being held again until 1948. The Gauliga Elsaß was the highest football league in the region of Alsace (German: Elsaß, the old orthography of Elsass) from 1940 to 1945. The Nazis reorganised the administrative region and the Alsace became part of the Gau Baden-Elsaß. Overview The league was introduced by the Nazi Sports Office in 1940, after the French defeat and the direct German administration of the Alsace region. The Alsace region was traditionally disputed between the two countries and had been part of the German Empire from 1871 to 1918, with its football clubs playing in the German league system then. Luftwaffensportverein Danzig was a short-lived German association football club from the city of Danzig, West Prussia (today Gdańsk, Poland). ''LSV'' was an air force (Luftwaffe) sports club that was active from 1941–44 and was made up primarily of flak soldiers. The Gauliga Böhmen und Mähren, was the highest football league in the parts of Czechoslovakia occupied by Germany on 15 March 1939 and incorporated in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia (German:''Protectorat Böhmen und Mähren'') from 1943 to 1945. The league only existed for one complete season. Overview After the German occupation the ethnically German clubs in the ''Protectorate'' initially entered the ''Gauliga Sudetenland''.
