1944 Cotton Bowl Classic
The 1944 Cotton Bowl Classic was a postseason college football bowl game between the fourteenth ranked 1943 Texas Longhorns football team, Texas Longhorns and the Randolph Field Ramblers, a military institution squad from San Antonio, TX. Background Randolph boasted many former college football stars, most notably Tulsa's Glenn Dobbs, who had 1,867 all purpose yards for the year with 1,431 passing and 421 yards rushing. He was also their punter, with a 40.2 average per kick. Martin Ruby became the first and only player to play on two different Cotton Bowl teams, having played in the 1942 Cotton Bowl Classic. Cotton Bowl (stadium)
The Cotton Bowl is an outdoor stadium in Dallas, Texas, United States. Opened in 1930 as Fair Park Stadium, it is on the site of the State Fair of Texas, known as Fair Park. The Cotton Bowl was the longtime home of the annual college football post-season bowl game known as the Cotton Bowl Classic, for which the stadium is named. Randolph Air Force Base was an United States Air Force base located at Universal City, Texas ( east-northeast of Downtown San Antonio). Opened in 1931, Randolph has been a flying training facility for the United States Army Air Corps, the United States Army Air Forces, and the Air Force during its entire existence. On 1 October 2010, Randolph AFB merged with Lackland Air Force Base and the US Army's Fort Sam Houston to form Joint Base San Antonio. Naming Randolph AFB was named after Captain William Millican Randolph, a native of Austin, who was on the base naming committee at the time of his death in a crash. The Cotton Bowl Classic (also known as the Cotton Bowl) is an American college football bowl game that has been held annually in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex since January 1, 1937. Ralph Ellsworth
Ralph Irving Ellsworth Jr. (January 28, 1924 – January 18, 1998) was a college football player and track athlete. He was an All-Conference back for the Texas Longhorns in 1943 and helped Texas to their first repeat conference championship and its first-ever bowl game in 1944. He transferred to the Naval Academy in 1944, but returned to Texas for the 1945 and 1946 seasons. He was drafted by the New York Giants, Chicago Bears and Cleveland Browns, but never played professional football. He was also a standout on the track who won a National Championship at Navy in 1945 and at Texas won conference championships in two individual events, three relays, and as part of two teams. George McCall
George Archibald McCall (March 16, 1802 – February 25, 1868) was a United States Army officer who became a brigadier general and prisoner of war during the American Civil War. He was also a naturalist. Biography McCall was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Archibald McCall (1767–1843), a descendant of the Schuyler family and the Van Cortlandt family through his ancestors Stephanus Van Cortlandt and Gertrude Schuyler, and Elizabeth Cadwalader. He was appointed from Pennsylvania to the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1822, 26th in his class of 40. His service took him to Florida, especially the Pensacola area. Leslie Aulds
Leycester Doyle "Leslie" Aulds (December 28, 1920 – October 13, 1999) also known as "Tex" Aulds, was a backup catcher in Major League Baseball who played three games for the Boston Red Sox in . Early life Aulds was born in Farmerville, Louisiana and raised in the Corpus Christi, Texas area where he was an Eagle Scout and excelled at sports in high school. He was first signed by a scout from the Cincinnati Reds in 1941, and played 21 games for the Class C Tucson Cowboys in the Arizona-Texas League. Military service Aulds joined the United States Army Air Forces in September 1942 and was stationed at Randolph Field in Texas. While there, he played both baseball and football, including an appearance in the 1944 Cotton Bowl Classic where he scored a touchdown. The 1942 Cotton Bowl Classic, part of the 1941 bowl game season, took place on January 1, 1942, at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas.
