1942 Wichita Shockers Football Team
The 1942 Wichita Shockers football team was an American football team that represented Wichita University (now known as Wichita State University) as an independent during the 1942 college football season. In their first season under head coach Ralph Graham, the Shockers compiled a 5–4 record, including its first victory over Kansas State since 1904, and outscored all opponents by a total of 125 to 106. Wichita was ranked at No. 189 (out of 590 college and military teams) in the final rankings under the Litkenhous Difference by Score System for 1942. Ralph Graham (American Football)
Ralph Mevlin Graham (August 16, 1910 – October 14, 2005) was an American football, basketball, and tennis player and coach. He served as the head football coach at the Municipal University of Wichita—now Wichita State University—in 1942 and from 1946 to 1947 and at Kansas State University from 1948 to 1950, compiling a career college football record of 21–39–1. Playing career Graham, a native of El Dorado, Kansas, played football at Kansas State University under head coach Bo McMillin. Known as "Rammin' Ralph", he was a first team All-Big Six Conference Fullback (gridiron football), fullback each year from 1931 to 1933. He nearly led K-State to the Rose Bowl Game, Rose Bowl in 1931 before getting injured. Following his senior season, Graham was a starter in the East–West Shrine Game, becoming the first Kansas State football player to be named to an all-star game. The 1942 Washington University Bears football teamrepresented Washington University in St. Louis as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) during the 1942 college football season. Led by Tom Gorman in his first and only season as head coach, the Bears compiled an overall record of 5–5 with a mark of 2–3 in conference play, tying for third place in the MVC.
