1942 Pro Bowl
The 1942 National Football League All-star Game (January) was the professional football league's fourth all-star game. The game pitted the Chicago Bears, the league's champion for the 1941 season, against a team of all-stars. The game was played on Sunday, January 4, 1942, at the Polo Grounds in New York City. The Bears defeated the all-stars by a score of 35–24. The George Halas' Bears entered the game as 4–1 favorites over the All-Stars led by New York Giants head coach Steve Owen. Although as many as 40,000 fans were expected, cold and snowy weather kept the crowd down to 17,725. Polo Grounds
The Polo Grounds was the name of three stadiums in Upper Manhattan, New York City, used mainly for professional baseball and American football from 1880 through 1963. The original Polo Grounds, opened in 1876 and demolished in 1889, was built for the sport of polo. Bound on the south and north by 110th and 112th streets and on the east and west by Fifth and Sixth (Lenox) avenues, just north of Central Park, it was converted to a baseball stadium when leased by the New York Metropolitans in 1880. The third Polo Grounds, built in 1890, was renovated after a fire in 1911 and became Polo Grounds IV, the one generally indicated when the ''Polo Grounds'' is referenced. The Chicago Bears are a professional American football team based in Chicago. 1941 National Football League Season
The 1941 NFL season was the 22nd regular season of the National Football League. Before the season, Elmer Layden was named the first Commissioner of the NFL, while Carl Storck resigned as league president. Layden also took on the duties of president and signed a five-year contract at $20,000 annually. The league bylaws were changed to provide for playoffs in cases where division races are tied after the regular season, and rules for sudden-death overtimes in case a playoff game was tied after four quarters. The defending league champion Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers finished the regular season tied in the Western Division, setting up the first divisional playoff game in league history.
