Maximiliano Hernández Martínez (20 October 1882 – 15 May 1966) was a Salvadoran military officer and politician who served as the president of El Salvador from 4 December 1931 to 28 August 1934 in an acting capacity and again in an official capacity from 1 March 1935 until his resignation on 9 May 1944. He was the leader of El Salvador during World War II. While he served as President Arturo Araujo's vice president and defense minister, a directorate seized power during a palace coup and afterwards named Hernández Martínez president of El Salvador. Cuscatlán Bridge (1942)
The Cuscatlán Bridge (Spanish: ''Puente Cuscatlán'') was a suspension bridge which spanned across the Lempa River in El Salvador. The bridge connected the departments of San Vicente and Usulután from its opening on 6 June 1942 until it was destroyed in a bombing by militants of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front on 1 January 1984 during the Salvadoran Civil War. The bridge used to be a part of the Pan-American Highway and was one of the major infrastructure projects ordered by President Maximiliano Hernández Martínez. After the bridge was destroyed, it was rebuilt in 1998 at the cost of 9 million dollars and it remains standing today. The 1942 Guatemala earthquake occurred at on August 6 and had ratings of 7.7 on the moment magnitude scale and 7.9 on the surface wave magnitude scale. The epicenter was located off the southern coast of Guatemala, and it was one of the strongest earthquakes ever recorded there. The earthquake caused widespread damage in the west-central highlands of Guatemala. Thirty-eight people died in the earthquake. Landslides caused by the combination of the earthquake and the heavy seasonal rains destroyed roads, the Inter-American Highway, and telegraph lines. In Tecpán Guatemala, more than 60% of the houses were demolished. Damage was reported in some buildings in Antigua Guatemala, including the Palacio de Los Capitanes Generales and some catholic churches.
