1940–41 Yugoslav Hockey League Season
The 1940–41 Yugoslav Hockey League season was the fifth season of the Yugoslav Hockey League. It was won by Ilirija. Structure The competition was divided up into divisions. The finals consisted of teams from three entities in which hockey was played in the country, Slovenia, Croatia and Serbia. There were four Croatian teams in the league, and they played against one another in the same division. The winner would thus advance on to the championship. Yugoslav Ice Hockey League
The Yugoslav Ice Hockey League was the top ice hockey league in the old Yugoslavia. In 1939, Yugoslavia became a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation. That year also, the country held its first national championship, with Ilirija emerging as champion. For many years, teams from Slovenia dominated even if Serbian and Croatian teams were also successful for a while during the late-1980s and early-1990s, right before the breakup of Yugoslavia. The league folded in 1991, when the country split. Since then, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina have had their own national leagues. Ernest Aljančič
Ernest "Nestl" Aljančič (5 December 1916 – 19 November 2006) was a Slovenian ice hockey player and official. Aljančič was one of ice-hockey pioneers in Yugoslavia. As a member of SK Ilrija he participated in the first Yugoslavian ice-hockey game against Kamnik team. He continued to play after the Second World War in the renamed HK Ljubljana team. He also played for the Yugoslavia national ice hockey team in the first international match against Austria national ice hockey team, where Aljančič scored first Yugoslav international goal. As a part of the Yugoslavia national team he participated in the 1951 and 1955 World Ice Hockey Championships, scoring two goals. In 1957, after a 25-year ice-hockey career, Aljančič retired. He later worked as an official trying to popularise the sport in Slovenia, helped to build Hala Tivoli ice-hockey rink and organize the 1966 World Ice Hockey Championships in it. Tone Pogačnik (ice Hockey)
Anton "Tone" Pogačnik (January 4, 1919 – June 2013) was a Slovenian cross-country skier who participated in the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland. He was born in Jesenice. In the Men's 18 km competition, he placed 56th with a time of 1'29:08. He also placed 9th with the Yugoslavian team in the Men's 4 × 10 km relay. On April 26, 1946, Pogačnik fell nearly to his death on Triglav, the highest mountain in Slovenia, after falling down a gap of 96 meters. He survived with no serious internal injuries. After becoming confused and lost in the fog, he had approached a dark section that he believed to be a rock structure, but was actually a drop. He landed on a snowy field between two rocky pillars and became stuck, having to wait several hours before being rescued. The next day, he descended the same route alone.
