1940–41 Chicago Black Hawks Season
The 1940–41 Chicago Black Hawks season was the team's 15th season in the NHL, and they were coming off a very good regular season in 1939–40, finishing above .500 for the first time in 4 seasons, however, they were quickly eliminated in 2 games by the Detroit Red Wings in the playoffs. The Black Hawks would have a rough regular season in 1940–41, slipping to a 16–25–7 record, good for 39 points and 5th place in the NHL, and a 2nd straight playoff berth. Frederic McLaughlin
Maj. Frederic McLaughlin (27 June 1877 – 17 December 1944) was an American businessman and soldier. He was the first owner of the Chicago Black Hawks National Hockey League (NHL) ice hockey team. Born in Chicago, Illinois, McLaughlin inherited the successful "McLaughlin's Manor House" coffee business from his father, who died in 1905. McLaughlin was a graduate of Harvard University and served in the United States Army during World War I. McLaughlin achieved the rank of Major and was often referred to as Major McLaughlin for the rest of his life. Philip "Nip" Hergesheimer (July 9, 1914 — March 6, 2004) was a Canadian professional ice hockey right winger who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) with the Chicago Black Hawks and Boston Bruins between 1939 and 1942. A native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Hergesheimer was the brother of fellow NHL player Wally Hergesheimer. The rest of Phil's career, which lasted between 1934 and 1955, was spent in various minor leagues. Cully Dahlstrom
Carl Sidney "Cully" Dahlstrom (July 3, 1912 — December 19, 1998) was an American professional ice hockey center who played eight seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Chicago Black Hawks between 1937 and 1945. He won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's top rookie for the 1937–38 season and won the Stanley Cup in the same season. He played 342 career NHL games, scoring 88 goals and 118 assists for 206 points. In 1973 he was elected to the United States Hockey Hall of Fame. The New York Americans, colloquially known as the Amerks, were a professional ice hockey team based in New York City from 1925 to 1942. They were the third expansion team in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL) and the second to play in the United States. The team never won the Stanley Cup, but reached the semifinals twice. While it was the first team in New York City, it was eclipsed by the second, the New York Rangers, which arrived in 1926 under the ownership of the Amerks' landlord, Madison Square Garden. The 1940–41 Toronto Maple Leafs season was the Toronto franchise's 24th season of play. Offseason Conn Smythe was making preparations for his eventual tour of duty in Europe. He felt that Dick Irvin would not be strong enough to deal with player issues while he was gone and Smythe convinced the Montreal Canadiens to hire Irvin. Smythe hired Hap Day as coach.
