1940 Palestine Cup
The 1940 Palestine Cup ( he, הגביע הארץ-ישראלי, ''HaGavia HaEretz-Israeli'') was the eleventh season of Israeli Football Association's nationwide football cup competition. The defending holders, Hapoel Tel Aviv, fell to city rival Maccabi Tel Aviv at the semi-final. Maccabi met the emerging team of Beitar Tel Aviv at the final and lost 1–3. The 6 teams from the Tel Aviv division of the 1939 Palestine League were given a bye to the second round, along with Hapoel Haifa. Hapoel Ramat Gan also received a bye during the draw. History During the British Mandate of Palestine period Hapoel had a bitter rivalry with Maccabi and organized its own competitions, with the exception of football, the only sport in which all the organizations played each other. At the time, Hapoel took no part in the ''Eretz Israel Olympic Committee'', which was controlled by Maccabi, and instead sought for international ties with similar workers sports organizations of socialist parties. Therefore, Hapoel became a member of SASI in 1927 and later was a member of CSIT. After the State of Israel was established, the rival sport organizations reached a 1951 agreement that allowed joint sports associations and competitions open for all Israeli residents. Moshe "Jerry" Beit haLevi ( he, ג'רי בית הלוי; 14 November 1912 – 3 February 1997) was an Israeli association football, football player and manager. Playing career Jerry played on the field with his brother Avraham Beit haLevi, Avraham. In 1939, during a tour of Australia, Avraham decided to stay in the country and it was the last time that Jerry would see his brother who ended up dying in battle New Guinea campaign, against Japanese forces in New Guinea. Managerial career Maccabi Tel Aviv and Israel After the retirement of Egon Pollack, Beit haLevi took over the reins of the club that made him famous as a player.
