1939–40 FC Basel Season
The FC Basel 1939–40 season was the forty-seventh season since the club's foundation on 15 November 1893. FC Basel played their home games in the Landhof in the district Wettstein in Kleinbasel. Albert Besse was the club's new chairman. He took over from Emil Junker at the AGM on 15 July 1939. Overview After being relegated last season for the first time in the club's history, Basel played this season in the newly reorganized 1.Liga. Due to the outbreak of World War II on 1 September 1939 the start of the Swiss football championship was postponed until 22 October and the 1. Liga postponed until December. The 1939–40 Nationalliga was played as "Championnat Suisse de Mobilisation" due to the war and the 1. Liga divided into five regional zones. There was to be no promotion and no relegation. FC Basel
Fussball Club Basel 1893, widely known as FC Basel, FCB, or just Basel, is a Swiss football club based in Basel, in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. AC Bellinzona
AC Bellinzona is a Swiss football club based in Bellinzona. It was founded in 1904, and won the Swiss Super League in 1948. After being folded in 2013 declaring bankruptcy, the team played the Ticino Group of 2.Liga, the sixth tier of the Swiss Football League System in 2014–15 season. After winning it and the 1. Alexander Ebner (footballer)
Alexander Ebner was a Swiss footballer who played during the 1940s. He played as midfielder. Ebner joined Basel's first team during their 1939–40 season. He played his domestic league debut for the club in the away game on 16 June 1940 as Basel drew 1–1 against Concordia Basel. Although Basel were 1 Liga champions that season, there was no relegation and no promotion due to the second World War. Again in the 1940–41 season Basel won their 1 Liga group, but in the promotion play-offs Basel were defeated by Cantonal Neuchatel and drew the game with Zürich. Their two play-off opponents were thus promoted and Basel remained for another season in the 1 Liga. In the season 1941–42 Basel were winners of the 1 Liga group East and played a play-off for promotion of the 1 Liga group West, FC Bern. Ernst Hufschmid (footballer)
Ernst Hufschmid (born 4 February 1913 in Basel – 30 November 2001 in Basel) was a Swiss footballer who played for Basel and Biel-Bienne. He also played for Switzerland in the 1934 FIFA World Cup. He played mainly in the position as midfielder, but in his later career also as defender. Club football Hufschmid played a total of 402 matches for Basel between 1929 and 1950. He scored 83 goals during this time. 268 of these games were in the Nationalliga, 53 in the Swiss Cup and 91 were friendly games. He scored 51 goals in the domestic league, 11 in the Swiss Cup and the other 22 were scored during the test games. He played for six months for Biel-Bienne in 11 games scoring one goal. An episode that is noted in association with the Swiss Cup, was the second-round replay away against FC Lugano on 22 November 1931. Ernst Grauer
Ernst Grauer (2 October 1913 – 6 May 2006) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel in the 1930s and 1940s. He played as defender. He also played two seasons for Concordia Basel and toward the end of his active career he played one season for Grasshopper Club. Grauer ended his active football career playing two seasons for Nordstern Basel in the early 1950s. Football career Grauer played his youth football for FC Basel and joined their first team in 1930. After playing two test games, Grauer played his domestic league debut for the club in the home game at the Landhof on 19 April 1931 as Basel won 3–0 against Concordia Basel. He scored his first goal for his club in the very next game on 26 April. It was the last goal of the away as Basel won 3–1 against FC Bern. Louis Favre (Switzerland Footballer)
Louis Favre was a Swiss footballer who played in the 1930s and 1940s. He played as defender. Favre played the 1935–36 Nationalliga season with Young Boys. Favre joined Basel's first team in advance of their 1936–37 season. He played his domestic league debut for his new club in the away game on 13 September 1936 as Basel won 3–1 against Nordstern Basel. Favre played ten seasons for Basel. Henri Bernard (10 March 1914 – 3 July 1942) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel. He played as defender. Bernard joined Basel's first team in their 1938–39 season. He played his domestic league debut for the club in the away game on 11 December 1938 as Basel were defeated 0–2 by La Chaux-de-Fonds. He scored his first goal for his club on 18 May 1939 in the home game at the Landhof against Lugano as Basel won 7–0. Paul Wechlin
Paul Wechlin (10 February 1920 - 4 July 2013) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel. He played as goalkeeper. Football career Wechlin played his youth football by FC Basel and joined the first team during their 1939–40 season under first team co-managers Walter Dietrich and Max Galler. He played his domestic league debut for the club in the away game on 10 September 1939 as Basel won 4–2 against Aarau. During his time with Basel he shared the goalkeeping in the beginning with Kurt Imhof and Silvio Cinguetti later with Walter Müller. Kurt Imhof
Kurt Imhof (* 1914; † unknown) was a Swiss footballer who played for FC Basel. He played in the position of goalkeeper. Between the years 1932 and 1935 and again between 1938 and 1947 Imhof played a total of 128 games for Basel. 85 of these games were in the Swiss Nationalliga, five were in the 1 Liga (second highest tier) and 15 were in the Swiss Cup. The other 22 were friendly games. He was a member of the Basel team that won the Swiss Cup in the 1932–33 season. The final was played in the Hardturm stadium against Grasshopper Club.
