1939–40 Cupa României
The 1939–40 Cupa României was the seventh edition of Romania's most prestigious football cup competition. The trophy was won by Rapid București after 4 finals, first three was draws. They defeated Venus București. Format The competition is an annual knockout tournament with pairings for each round drawn at random. There are no seeds for the draw. The draw also determines which teams will play at home. Each tie is played as a single leg. If a match is drawn after 90 minutes, the game goes in extra time, and if the scored is still tight after 120 minutes, there a replay will be played, usually at the ground of the team who were away for the first game. From the first edition, the teams from Divizia A entered in competition in sixteen finals, rule which remained till today. Fotbal Club Rapid 1923, commonly known as Rapid București () or simply as Rapid, is a Romanian professional football club based in Bucharest, which competes in the Liga I. It was founded in 1923 by employees of the Grivița workshops as ''Asociația Culturală și Sportivă CFR'' ("CFR Cultural and Sports Association"). Domestically, Rapid București is one of the most successful clubs in the country, having won three national titles, 13 Cupa României and four Supercupa României. Internationally, its highest achievements are reaching the quarter-finals of the 1972–73 Cup Winners' Cup and of the 2005–06 UEFA Cup, and the final of the 1940 Mitropa Cup, the latter not being played because of the Second World War. Dunărea Galați was a Romanian professional football club from Galați, Galați county, south-east Romania, founded in 1970. The club was dissolved in 2014. History The club was founded in 1970, took the place of Oțelul Galați in Divizia B and has played for 5 seasons in the Liga I. For a brief period, it was Galați's main team, but after the rise of Oțelul in the 1980s, it is seen only in the Liga II and the Liga III. They were supposed to be relegated to Liga III at the end of the 2007–08 season, but they managed to maintain their second league position due to the withdrawal of FCM Câmpina. The 2009–10 season started well, the team reaching the Round of 32 of the Romanian Cup, being eliminated by cup holders CFR Cluj. They finished 11th in the league. FC Ploieşti was a football club based in Ploieşti, Romania. It was founded in 1922 and dissolved in 1949. History In 1922, in Ploieşti, Tricolor club was formed, some of the founding members being: Gheorghiu, Jan Vasopol, Elly Roman the composer (the first president) and N. Stambolgiu. FC Sportul Studențesc, commonly referred to as Sportul is a Romanian professional football club based in Bucharest, that last played at senior level in the Liga IV. Founded in 1916, Sportul Studențesc was one of the oldest Romanian clubs still active. The club's best European performance came in the 1979–80 Balkans Cup, when it won the trophy, defeating Yugoslavian side NK Rijeka in the final. The club made it to the Balkans Cup final on one other occasion, in 1976, when it lost to another Yugoslavian side, Dinamo Zagreb.
