1939 World Table Tennis Championships
The 1939 World Table Tennis Championships were held in Cairo from March 6 to March 11, 1939. Only 11 men's teams and 5 women's teams entered the Championships. Hungary, the United States and Austria were the major nations missing. Viktor Barna and Richard Bergmann played under the England flag for the first time. Ken Hyde
James Kenneth Hyde (1915-2010) was a male English international table tennis player. Table tennis career He won two bronze medals at the 1939 World Table Tennis Championships in the men's doubles with Hyman Lurie and in the Swaythling Cup (men's team event) with Ernest Bubley, Hyman Lurie, Ken Stanley and Arthur Wilmott. He represented England 16 times between 1933 and 1939. He played for the Liverpool club, was ranked English number one in 1937 and was the only Englishman to beat Viktor Barna. He reached the final of the English Open doubles in 1934 when partnering with Andrew Millar. Personal life He studied at the University of Liverpool and earned a BSc in chemistry. His brothers Gilbert Cecil Hyde and Eric Hyde both played county table tennis. He married in 1940 and was in the Royal Air Force. He died in 2010. Alojzy Ehrlich
Alojzy "Alex" Ehrlich (1914 – 7 December 1992), also called "King of the Chiselers," was a Polish table tennis player, widely regarded as one of the best players in Polish history of this sport, who three times won silver in the World Table Tennis Championships, World Championships. Ehrlich was ranked world No. 6 in 1938 by Hon. Ivor Montagu and world No. 9 in 1950. He was a very popular athlete in interbellum Poland; in 1934 Ehrlich was placed on the 8th position in the prestigious list of 10 most popular sportsmen of Poland, made by readers of the national sports daily '' Przeglad Sportowy''. In 1936 in Prague, he lost to Stanislav Kolar from Czechoslovakia. In 1937 in Baden, he lost to Austrian player Richard Bergmann, and two years later in Cairo, he lost to Bergmann again. Angelica Rozeanu
Angelica Rozeanu (née Adelstein) (15 October 1921 – 21 February 2006) was a Romanian table tennis player of Jewish origin, the most successful female table tennis player in the history of the sport, winning the women's world singles title 6 years in succession. Table tennis career Rozeanu started playing table tennis while recovering from scarlet fever when she was eight. In 1933, at age 12, she won the Romanian Cup. She won the Romanian national championship in 1936 and remained Romania's female champion for the next 21 years (1936–57, excluding World War II). Her first major win was the 1938 Hungarian Open. Her career was interrupted by World War II, as from 1940 to 1944 she was barred from even entering a gymnasium in Romania and was unable to play. Rozeanu won her first World Championship in 1950, starting the winning run that would see her win the championship six years in succession, a feat yet to be matched. Věra Votrubcová is a former female international table tennis player from Czechoslovakia. Table tennis career From 1936 to 1947 she won thirteen medals in singles, doubles, and team events in the World Table Tennis Championships. She also won three English Open titles. The 13 World Championship medals included six gold medals; two in the team event, two in the mixed doubles with Bohumil Váňa and two in the women's doubles with Vlasta Depetrisová. Hall of Fame She was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the International Table Tennis Federation in 1993. Marie Kettnerová (born in Prague on 4 April 1911; died in London on 28 February 1998) was a female Czech international table tennis player. Table tennis career She won an incredible 23 World Table Tennis Championships medals from 1933 to 1950. She was a singles gold medal winner of the World Table Tennis Championships in both women's single and doubles. Vlasta Depetrisová (20 December 1920 – 23 October 2003) was a Czech female international table tennis player. Table tennis career From 1936 to 1948 she won fourteen medals in singles, doubles, and team events in the World Table Tennis Championships. Her married name was Vlasta Pokorná. The fourteen World Championship medals included four gold medals; one in the singles at the 1949 World Table Tennis Championships, one in the women's team event and two in the doubles with Věra Votrubcová. Gertrude Pritzi
Gertrude Pritzi (15 January 1920 - 21 October 1968) was a female international table tennis player from Austria. Table tennis career From 1937 to 1953, she won fourteen medals in singles, doubles and team events in the World Table Tennis Championships. She also won doubles and team medals in the European Table Tennis Championships. The champion of Women's Singles in 1937 was declared vacant due to time limit rule in force at the time. In 2001, it was decided to declare the two players (i.e., Gertrude Pritzi and Ruth Aarons) Co-Champions. She began her table tennis career with the association Badner AC, changed 1936 finally to post office sports association Vienna and 1945 to Austria Vienna. In 1937 and 1938 she won and became generally accepted the Austrian championship thereby against the Trude Wildam prevailing at that time.
