1938 Cork Grand Prix
The 1938 Cork Grand Prix was a Grand Prix motor racing, Grand Prix motor race held at Carrigrohane to the west of Cork (city), Cork city in Ireland on 23 April 1938. The 200-mile race was run over more than 30 laps of a six-mile circuit. It was won by the French driver René Dreyfus in a Delahaye car, with second place going to Prince Bira in a Maserati. The course ran along the Carrigrohane Straight to Victoria Cross, turned right towards Dennehy's Cross, from there on to Model Farm Road, and west towards eastern outskirts of Ballincollig. This back stretch finished at the Poulavone hairpin bend, before passing "Hell Hole Corner", and back onto the Carrigrohane Straight. The race was watched by an estimated 70,000 spectators, with participants reportedly representing 12 countries. Carrigrohane
Carrigrohane (also Currikippane or Kilgrohanmore, meaning "marsh of the little sticks") is a village and civil parishes in Ireland, civil parish situated on the south bank of the River Lee (Ireland), River Lee to the west of the city of Cork (city), Cork in Republic of Ireland, Ireland. It is connected by the Carrigrohane Straight, west of Cork (city), Cork and is also in the northeastern part of Ballincollig. It contains St Peter's Church of the Resurrection. In 1837, it had a population of 1921 inhabitants. The civil parish is almost evenly split between the Barony (Ireland), baronies of Muskerry East to the west and the Barony of Cork to the east. Gianfranco Comotti
Gianfranco "Franco" Comotti (July 24, 1906 – May 10, 1963) was an Italian racecar driver. He participated in two World Championship Formula One Grands Prix, debuting on 3 September 1950. He scored no championship points. He also participated in numerous non-Championship Formula One races. Racing career A native of Bergamo, he first appeared at the 1928 Italian Grand Prix in one of Scuderia Materassi’s Talbots. After this race Comotti disappeared from the racing scene but he returned in 1931 when he won the cyclecar race at the Circuito di Alessandria in a Salmson. He then brought an Alfa Romeo Monza sports car to Scuderia Ferrari in Modena for servicing and became an official driver for the team in 1932. In 1934 Comotti won the Grand Prix du Comminges for Ferrari. Later that year he finished third at the 1934 Italian Grand Prix together with Carlo Felice Trossi. Bugatti
Automobiles Ettore Bugatti was a German then French manufacturer of high-performance automobiles. The company was founded in 1909 in the then-German city of Molsheim, Alsace, by the Italian-born industrial designer Ettore Bugatti. The cars were known for their design beauty and for their many race victories. Famous Bugatti automobiles include the Type 35 Grand Prix cars, the Type 41 "Royale", the Type 57 "Atlantic" and the Type 55 sports car. The death of Ettore Bugatti in 1947 proved to be a severe blow for the marque, and the death of his son Jean Bugatti in 1939 meant that there was no successor to lead the factory. Jean-Pierre Wimille (26 February 1908 – 28 January 1949) was a Grand Prix motor racing driver and a member of the French Resistance during World War II. Biography Born in Paris, France to a father who loved motor sports and was employed as the motoring correspondent for the Petit Parisien newspaper, Jean-Pierre Wimille developed a fascination with racing cars at a young age. He was 22 years old when he made his Grand Prix debut, driving a Bugatti 37A at the 1930 French Grand Prix in Pau. Joseph Leonard John Paul was a priest of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Karachi in Pakistan. Early life and education Born in Karachi in 1937, he studied at the St Patrick's High School. He obtained a bachelor's degree in 1969, a master's in English in 1972 and a bachelor's in education in 1976.
