1937 South American Championship
The fourteenth edition of the South American Championship of football was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina from 27 December 1936 to 1 February 1937. The participating countries were Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay thus making this the first edition in which more than five teams took part of the event. Bolivia, and Colombia (a new CONMEBOL member) withdrew from the tournament. José María Minella
José María Minella (1909–1981) was an Argentine football player and manager. He played for and managed Argentina's national team. Club career A midfielder, Minella started playing at local club Independiente of Mar del Plata. On 23 August 1925, he was part of the local league team that achieved a 1–0 win over a team made of battleship HMS ''Repulse''´s crewmembers during the Prince of Wales visit to Argentina. In 1928 he was signed by Gimnasia La Plata who won the amateur Argentine championship in 1929. He played in the team nicknamed ''El Expreso'' ("The Express") that nearly won the championship in 1933. In 1935 he moved to River Plate where he was part of three championship's winning teams in 1936, 1937 and 1941. Towards the end of his playing career he played in Uruguay with Peñarol and in Chile with Green Cross. Luisinho Oliveira
Luís Mesquita de Oliveira, best known as ''Luisinho'', (29 March 1911, in Rio de Janeiro – 27 December 1983, in São Paulo) was an association footballer, one of the most valuable strikers of the 1930s. During his career (1928–1946) he played for Anglo Brasileira, Paulistano, Estudantes São Paulo, São Paulo and Palmeiras. He won seven São Paulo State Championship (1929, 1931, 1936, 1940, 1943, 1945, 1946) and was top goalscorer of Campeonato Paulista in 1944 with 22 goals scored. He's also the six best top goalscorer in São Paulo Futebol Clube history with 145 goals, and nine best goalscorer in Palmeiras history with 123 goals from 1935 to 1941. For the Brazil national football team he scored 4 goals at South American Championship 1937 and participated at the 1934 FIFA World Cup, played one match with Spain in Genoa, and in the 1938 FIFA World Cup, playing two matches. José Fontana (19 March 1912 – 3 April 1986), commonly known as Rei, was a Brazilian soccer player, who played as goalkeeper. Career Rei began his career with Coritiba Foot Ball Club, but his good play took him to Vasco da Gama, where he replaced Jaguaré Bezerra de Vasconcelos when the latter went to FC Barcelona. Rei got his nickname from his impeccable style of dressing, and was seen as a ladies' man, having lived with the famous singer Aracy de Almeida for four years.
