1937 Individual Speedway World Championship
The 1937 Individual Speedway World Championship was the second edition of the official World Championship to determine the world champion rider. An attendance of 85,000 (a record for speedway in the United Kingdom at the time) saw Jack Milne win all five races to head an all USA top three on the podium. The track was criticised and was described as being too deep with cinders. Qualifying The top 16 riders over 7 qualifying rounds and 7 Championship rounds would qualify for the World final. Tommy Croombs and Alex Statham qualified as first reserves. Individual Speedway World Championship
The World Championship of Speedway is an international competition between the highest-ranked motorcycle speedway riders of the world, run under the auspices of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM). The first official championships were held in 1936. Today, this official FIM championship is organised as a series of Speedway Grand Prix events, where points are awarded according to performance in the event and tallied up at the end of each season. However, up to 1994, it was run as a single-night event after qualifying rounds during the season, leading up to a big final of 20 heats, where points were awarded according to riders' heat placings and then tallied up at the end. Before the World Championship received its formal recognition from the ACU and the FIM in 1936, other unofficial Speedway World Championships were staged between 1931 and 1935, in Europe, South America and Australasia. Wembley Stadium (1923)
The original Wembley Stadium (; originally known as the Empire Stadium) was a stadium in Wembley, London, best known for hosting important football matches. It stood on the same site now occupied by its successor. Alec George Statham (30 May 1912 Coventry, England - 8 March 1977) was a Speedway rider who won the London Riders' Championship in 1949 whilst with the Wimbledon Dons, and also represented England many times.Belton, Brian (2003). Tommy Croombs
Thomas Croombs (13 December 1906 – 15 October 1980) was a Speedway rider who finished third in the Star Riders' Championship in 1931, the forerunner to the Speedway World Championship. He was born in New Malden, Surrey, England. He rode for Lea Bridge in 1929 and moved onto the West Ham Hammers in 1930. He stayed with the Hammers until the end of the 1939 season when he retired. In 1947 he made a comeback, riding for West Ham, starting as reserve and then back as a full team member within six weeks. William Kitchen (7 December 1908 in Galgate, Lancashire, England – May 1994) was an international speedway rider who started his career with the Belle Vue Aces in 1933. Jens Henning Fisker Hansen (10 January 1905 in Frederikssund, Denmark – 21 February 1995), known popularly as Morian Hansen, was a former motorcycle speedway rider from Denmark who rode in the first ever Speedway World Championship Final in 1936.
