1936 National Challenge Cup
The 1936 National Challenge Cup was the annual open cup held by the United States Football Association now known as the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. This edition featured the fifth of six consecutive final appearances for Alex McNab's team. The Shamrocks not participating in their local league that year were playing inter city matches with top competition primarily from Cleveland, Chicago and Detroit. One of their only losses during the season was to Heidelberg, eventual Western Final opponents of the Shamrocks. Early in the season Heidelberg took the first game of a three-game set, the second match ended in a draw and McNab's men evened up the series by pulling out a victory in the third game. Both teams eventually made their way to the Western Final, Heidelberg led by the lone scorer for the USA at the 1934 World Cup Aldo Donelli. Bert Patenaude
Bertrand "Bert" Arthur Patenaude (; November 4, 1909November 4, 1974) was an American soccer player who played as a forward. Although it was formerly disputed, he is now officially credited by FIFA as scorer of the first hat-trick in the World Cup history. He is a member of the United States Soccer Hall of Fame. Club career Born in Massachusetts in 1909, Patenaude began playing in the competitive local leagues in his hometown of Fall River, Massachusetts. In 1928, he signed his first professional contract with Philadelphia Field Club of the American Soccer League. In his eight games with Philadelphia, he scored six goals. Despite this productivity, he moved to J&P Coats for one league game, then moved again to his hometown Fall River Marksmen. Brooklyn Hispano
The Brooklyn Hispano was an American soccer club based in Brooklyn, New York that was an inaugural member of the reformed American Soccer League. The club was named the Brooklyn Giants for the 1942/43 season only. The Hispano club competed in the Southern New York State Football Association with several successful runs in their Cup competition during the 1920s. The club won the competition in 1927 and 1930 as the New York Hispano. N.Y. Hispano was a member of the professional Eastern Soccer League - a rival of the A.S.L. during the "soccer war" of 1929-1930. After 7 games of the 1933/34 ASL season the team merged with Brooklyn F.C. Brookhattan
Brookhattan was an American soccer club based in New York City that was a member of the professional American Soccer League (ASL). Formed in 1933, they joined the American Soccer League and won the first half of the league's 1933 season. Following that league's collapse they joined an identically named league in late 1933. In 1942 they won the Lewis Cup, and in 1945 the ASL, National Challenge Cup and Lewis Cup. In 1948, coffee importer Eugene Diaz, previous owner of New York Galicia, bought the team. In that year they finished second in the 1948 National Challenge Cup. During the 1948-49 season, Pito Villanon led the ASL in scoring. The New York Americans were an American soccer club founded in 1931. Based in New York, New York, it played in both the first American Soccer League and second American Soccer League. History In 1931, Erno Schwarz, who had played for both the New York Giants and Hakoah All-Stars in the ASL, founded his own team, the New York Americans. That fall, he entered it into the American Soccer League which was in the process of collapsing caused by financial losses stemming from the 1928–1929 "Soccer Wars" and the onset of the Great Depression. Schwarz owned, played for and managed the Americans through the last two years of the ASL's existence. After the disintegration of the original ASL following the 1933 spring season, the ownership of the Americans and New York Brookhattan helped form a new, but lower professional level, ASL in 1933/34. Francis Ryan
Francis J. “Hun” Ryan (January 10, 1908, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – October 14, 1977, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was an American soccer midfielder. He earned three caps, scoring one goal, with the U.S. national team between 1928 and 1936. He was also a member of the U.S. teams at the 1928 Summer Olympics, 1936 Summer Olympics, and the 1934 FIFA World Cup. Ryan was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame in 1958. Playing career Ryan grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he played soccer with Frankford High School. He also played for the Lighthouse Boys Club team. He maintained his amateur status which led to his selection to the national team at the 1928 Summer Olympics. In 1929, he signed with New York Galicia.
