The Tortoise And The Hare (film)
''The Tortoise and the Hare'' is a 1935 American animated short film released on January 5, 1935, by United Artists, produced by Walt Disney and directed by Wilfred Jackson. Based on an Aesop's fable of the same name, it won the 1934 Oscar for Best Short Subject: Cartoons. This cartoon is also believed to be one of the inspirations for Bugs Bunny by Warner Bros., who first appeared in 1940.Barrier (2003), p. 359-362 Plot Max Hare is the heavy favorite to win a major sporting event. He is cocky, athletic, and incredibly fast. His challenger, Toby Tortoise, is teased and jeered for being sluggish and clumsy. He does seem to have the ability to stretch, which comes in handy in certain situations. Max tells Toby that he intends to play fair, but it seems obvious that Max is just out to humiliate his competition. The race begins and Max zooms off. Even though the start and end dates for certain scenes are incomplete, the cartoon was produced relatively quickly, with confirmed dates on the animation being done from January 17 to February 14, 1935 and the cartoon first being released on March 30, 1935. Plot When a little girl falls asleep after reading a fairy tale to her doll, her toys come to life. The toys act out a fairy tale in which a prince has to fight a dragon. It is based on the nursery rhyme '' Who Killed Cock Robin?''. It was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Animated Short category. An extract from the cartoon was featured the following year in Alfred Hitchcock's ''Sabotage''; the film's opening credits thank Disney for giving permission. Plot While Cock Robin is serenading Jenny Wren, an unseen archer shoots an arrow into Cock Robin's heart. Then he falls to the ground, giving the other birds in the tree an impression that he has been shot and killed. ''The Cookie Carnival'' is an animated short produced by Walt Disney Productions and originally released May 25, 1935. It is a Cinderella story involving a cookie girl who wishes to be queen at the cookie carnival, and a homage to the Atlantic City boardwalk parade and bathing beauty contest (what eventually became the Miss America pageant) of the 1920s and 1930s. Plot Various sweets and goodies of Cookietown are preparing to crown their new cookie queen. A parade of potential candidates passes by, all based on various cakes and sweets. Far from the parade, on what would appear to be the wrong side of the peppermint stick railroad tracks, a gingerbread man overhears a sugar cookie girl crying. This is the third of a series of Betty Boop melodrama spoofs, which also included ''She Wronged Him Right'' (1934), '' Betty Boop's Prize Show'' (1935) and '' Honest Love and True'' (1938). Synopsis Betty is performing on-stage with her boyfriend, Freddy, in an old-fashioned melodrama, complete with mustachioed villain. The vile fiend, after tying up the hero, tempts Betty with diamonds and fur, but she replies by singing the title song. The villain kidnaps Betty and escapes in his balloon, but is eventually caught by Freddy and forced to release Betty. Song The title song was written by Al Sherman, Al Lewis, Abner Silver in 1934, and sung by Mae Questel. The Kids in the Shoe is a 1935 short animated film produced by Max Fleischer. It is a humorous retelling of the classic nursery rhyme. This short film was released on May 19, 1935, as part of the Color Classics collection. Synopsis In the shoe, the woman and her children are shown on their daily lives. Curiously enough, all of the children look identical with the exception of the youngest child, whom the woman tends to personally. It is shown that the children are rebellious by nature, purposefully giving their meals to the cat and avoiding their combing and tooth brushing. "You didn't eat your broth and you didn't eat your bread, so go ahead and brush and hurry into bed!" yells the woman to the kids. After the children are sent to sleep, they begin a rowdy song and the situation becomes happy but highly chaotic. ''Buddy's Lost World'' is a 1935 Warner Bros. ''Looney Tunes'' cartoon, directed by Jack King. The short was released on May 18, 1935, and stars Buddy, the second star of the series. The title is likely a reference to the 1925 silent film ''The Lost World'', itself based upon the 1912 novel by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The music playing throughout much of the cartoon is " Lullaby of Broadway", played in a minor key. Summary Captain Buddy leaves on a maritime expedition around the world as many adoring well-wishers cheer him on. ''Water Babies'' is a '' Silly Symphonies'' cartoon released on May 11, 1935, by United Artists. The cartoon was directed by Wilfred Jackson. It features 2-inch-tall nude babies playing games in and out of the water. The babies are all completely identical other than the color of their hair. The edited version of the cartoon eliminates some shots that feature nude baby bottoms as a sight gag. This cartoon was followed in 1938 by a sequel short, '' Merbabies''. Plot The cartoon begins with several water lilies opening to reveal a 2-inch-tall water baby sleeping in each one. The babies immediately awaken and leap into the water, except for one reluctant, redheaded baby who is assisted by hard slaps on the bottom from his water lily. ''The Peace Conference'' is a 1935 short animated film by Columbia Pictures, featuring the comic strip character Krazy Kat. Plot Amidst conflict occurring in other nations, leaders from various parts of the world gather at a government building to discuss peace. At a dining table, the leaders' associates are receiving slices of ham. Because they couldn't agree about which kind of slice they should have, however, the associates brawl onto the table. Momentarily, an army tank barges into the building. Coming out of the tank is none other than Krazy Kat. Krazy tells the rowdy associates that he can restore peace with his special rifle. The associates find his method ludicrous and therefore laugh. To prove them wrong, the cat fires his rifle at them, but unlike regular bullets, the projectiles conjure small-scale people which resemble celebrities at the time (see below). The Robber Kitten
The Robber Kitten is a 1935 Walt Disney Silly Symphonies cartoon, directed by David Hand. Plot A kitten named Ambrose is dreaming about running away and becoming a robber. Calling himself "Butch" at the beginning of the cartoon, he is seen play–acting a stagecoach robbery, which is interrupted by his mother calling for him to take a bath. Not wanting to take a bath in the first place, Ambrose runs away and becomes a robber, first stealing a bag of cookies. His first target turns out to be an actual robber: Dirty Bill the bulldog. Dirty Bill asks Ambrose if he has pulled off any robberies lately, and Ambrose tells him, "Just this morning, I held up a stagecoach." Then Dirty Bill asks Ambrose where his loot is, so Ambrose shows Dirty Bill the bag of cookies. Imagining that the bag is full of gold, Dirty Bill demands it and threatens Ambrose.
