1935 Toledo Rockets Football Team
The 1935 Toledo Rockets football team was an American football team that represented Toledo University (renamed the University of Toledo in 1967) in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) during the 1935 college football season. In their fifth season under head coach Jim Nicholson, the team compiled a 6–2–1 record, held all opponents to 32 points, and outscored opponents by a combined total of 185 to 32. The team's victories included games against Bowling Green (63–0) and Louisville (41–7). The defense held opponents to 3.6 points per game and allowed only five touchdowns and zero passing touchdowns, each of which remains a program record. The 63-point margin of victory over Bowling Green remains the third largest in program history. The Bowling Green–Toledo football rivalry, dating back to 1919, was terminated after the 1935 season and was not revived until 1948. Jerry Welling was the team captain. Ohio Athletic Conference
The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) was formed in 1902 and is the third oldest athletic conference in the United States. Its current commissioner is Sarah Otey. Former commissioners include Mike Cleary, who was the first General Manager of a professional basketball team to hire an African American head coach, and would later run the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA). The Ohio Athletic Conference competes in the NCAA's Division III. Through the years, 31 schools have been members of the OAC. The enrollments of the current ten member institutions range from around 1,000 to 4,500. Member teams are located in Ohio. The 1935 Haskell Indians football team was an American football that represented the Haskell Institute—now known as Haskell Indian Nations University—as an independent during the 1935 college football season. The team compiled a record of 0–7–1, failed to score a point in five of its eight games, and was outscored by a total of 166 to 37.
