1933 World Ice Hockey Championships
The 1933 Ice Hockey World Championships were held between February 18 and February 26, 1933, in Prague, Czechoslovakia. By winning its first-ever world championship, the United States deprived Canada of the world title for the first time in tournament history. The American team, the Massachusetts Rangers, was mostly made up of university students and led by standout performances of Gerry Cosby in goal and team captain Ben Langmaid on defence. Canada was represented by the Toronto National Sea Fleas, winners of the 1932 Allan Cup, and coached by the controversial hockey personality Harold Ballard. The teams met on February 26 at Zimní stadión on Štvanice island. Tied 1-1 after 45 minutes of regulation time on goals by Sherman Forbes for the United States and an equalizer by Canadian Tim Kerr, defenceman John Garrison beat Canadian goalie Ron Geddes at the 6-minute mark of a dramatic "non-sudden death" overtime period. Winthrop Palmer
Winthrop Hale "Ding" Palmer, Jr. (December 5, 1906 – February 4, 1970) was an American ice hockey player who competed in the 1932 Winter Olympics. He died in Warehouse Point, Connecticut. Early life Born in Summit, New Jersey, Palmer graduated from Kent School in Kent, Connecticut in 1926 where he played on the team with fellow hockey Olympian Johnny Bent. Both Palmer and Bent also played hockey at Yale University prior to competing in the Olympics. In 1932 he was a member of the Olympic American ice hockey team, which won the silver medal. He played all six matches and scored eight goals. He was also a member of the Massachusetts Rangers, the American team that won the 1933 World Ice Hockey Championships. IIHF Men's World Ice Hockey Championships
The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF; french: Fédération internationale de hockey sur glace; german: Internationale Eishockey-Föderation) is a worldwide governing body for ice hockey. It is based in Zurich, Switzerland, and has 83 member countries. The IIHF maintains the IIHF World Ranking based on international ice hockey tournaments. Rules of play for IIHF events differ from hockey in North America and the rules of the National Hockey League (NHL). Decisions of the IIHF can be appealed through the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland. The IIHF maintains its own hall of fame for international ice hockey. The IIHF Hall of Fame was founded in 1997, and has been located within the Hockey Hall of Fame since 1998. Stewart Iglehart
Stewart Birrell Iglehart (February 22, 1910 – December 19,1993) was a rancher, ice hockey and polo player. He was born in Valparaíso, Chile but moved to the United States at a young age. As a child he learned to play both ice hockey and polo. While in prep school he was offered a professional ice hockey contract but declined. Following prep school he attended Yale University, where he continued to play ice hockey and polo. He became one of the best defensemen in college hockey and was selected to play in two different Winter Olympics. Iglehart did not attend either. In 1933 he played for Team USA at the World Ice Hockey Championships, winning a gold medal. Following the tournament he continued to play amateur hockey, but quit to concentrate on polo. As a polo player he won multiple championships and became a 10-goal rated player. He represented the United States internationally on several occasions.
