Nova Scotia New Democratic Party
The Nova Scotia New Democratic Party is a social-democratic, progressive provincial party in Nova Scotia, Canada. It is the provincial entity of the federal New Democratic Party (NDP). It was founded as the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) in 1932, and became the New Democratic Party in 1961. It became the governing party of Nova Scotia following the 2009 Nova Scotia election, winning 31 seats in the Legislature, under the leadership of Premier Darrell Dexter. It is the first New Democratic Party in Atlantic Canada to form a government, and the second to form a government in a province east of Manitoba. The party lost government at the 2013 election, losing 24 seats, including Dexter's seat. The outgoing leader, Gary Burrill, is credited with bringing the party back to its left-wing roots, after the centrist policies of Dexter. The party currently holds 6 seats in the Legislature. Robert Albert Douglas (June 22, 1887 – January 4, 1959) was a contractor and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Pictou County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1925 to 1933 as a Liberal-Conservative member. He was born in Alma, Nova Scotia, the son of John Alexander Douglas and Mary L. Kings was a provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada that, at the time of its dissolution, elected two members to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. Reginald Tucker Caldwell
Reginald Tucker Caldwell (June 11, 1885 – March 2, 1939) was a grocer, real estate broker and political figure in Nova Scotia, Canada. He represented Kings County in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1925 to 1933 as a Conservative member. He was born in Berwick, Nova Scotia, the son of Rupert Caldwell and Eva Crowe. Glace Bay-Dominion
Glace Bay-Dominion is a provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada, that elects one member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. The Member of the Legislative Assembly since 2021 is John White of the Progressive Conservative Party of Nova Scotia. It was created in 1933 when the district of Cape Breton was divided into five electoral districts, one of which was named Cape Breton East. In 2001, the district name was changed to Glace Bay. In 2003, the district lost a small area at its southern tip to Cape Breton West. Robert Hamilton Butts
Robert Hamilton Butts (August 4, 1871 in Port Morien, Nova Scotia, Canada – November 29, 1943) was a politician, barrister and lawyer. He was elected to the House of Commons of Canada as a member of the Unionist Party in the 1917 election to represent the riding of Cape Breton South and Richmond. He was defeated in the 1923 by-election for the riding of North Cape Breton and Victoria. Shelburne is a provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada which existed between 1867 and 2013 and since 2021. Since 2021 and between 1933 and 2013 it has elected one member to the Nova Scotia House of Assembly; from 1867 to 1933 it elected two members. The electoral district includes Shelburne County in its entirety. The electoral district was abolished following the 2012 electoral boundary review and was largely replaced by the new electoral districts of Queens-Shelburne and Argyle-Barrington. Wishart McLea Robertson
Wishart McLea Robertson, (February 15, 1891 – August 16, 1967) was a politician in Nova Scotia, Canada. Robertson's paternal grandfather, Robert Robertson, was a member of Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1854 until 1878. His father, Thomas Robertson was also a member of the provincial legislature, as well as serving as a Liberal Member of Parliament (MP) from 1882 to 1887. His mother was Josephine Allan. Born in Barrington Passage, Nova Scotia, Wishart Robertson was educated in a Nova Scotia high school. He moved to Brooklyn, United States, to enter business, but returned to Canada in 1916 to join the 219th Battalion and then the 85th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force as a lieutenant. Guysborough-Tracadie
Guysborough-Tracadie is a provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada, that elects one member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. It was created in 1867 as Guysborough. It included all of Guysborough County and elected two members to the House of Assembly. In 1933, the number of members elected was reduced to one. In 1993, the name was changed to Guysborough–Port Hawkesbury as the town of Port Hawkesbury was added to the district. In 2003 it was renamed Guysborough–Sheet Harbour as it gained an eastern area from Eastern Shore and lost Port Hawkesbury to Inverness. In 2013, following the recommendations of the 2012 Electoral Boundaries Commission, the district was renamed Guysborough–Eastern Shore–Tracadie and gained the area east of the Tracadie River from Antigonish. Yarmouth is a provincial electoral district in Nova Scotia, Canada, that elects one member of the Nova Scotia House of Assembly. It consists of the Municipality of the District of Yarmouth and the town of Yarmouth. From 1867 to 1981, the district included all of Yarmouth County and for most of that time elected two members.
