1933 International University Games
The 1933 International University Games were organised by the Confederation Internationale des Etudiants (CIE) and held in Turin, Italy. Held from 1–10 September, 27 nations competed in nine sports. Women competed only in the athletics, swimming, fencing, and tennis events (the latter two being debut events for women). Harry Voigt
Harry Voigt (15 June 1913 – 29 October 1986) was a German athlete who competed mainly in the 400 metres. Voigt was born in Berlin. He competed for Germany in the 1936 Summer Olympics held in Berlin, Germany in the 4 x 400 metre relay where he won the bronze medal with his team mates Helmut Hamann, Friedrich von Stülpnagel and Rudolf Harbig. Ralph Kilner Brown
Sir Ralph Kilner Brown, OBE, TD, DL (28 August 1909 – 15 June 2003), was a British hurdling athlete, Liberal Party politician and judge. Background He was born in Calcutta, the son of Rev. A. E. Brown. He was educated at Kingswood School, Bishop Vesey's Grammar School and Trinity Hall, Cambridge. He married, in 1943, Cynthia Rosemary Breffit. They had one son, two daughters and five grandchildren. Sports career He was a British 440 yards hurdles champion. At the 1934 Empire Games he won the bronze medal in the 440 yards hurdles event. He missed the 1936 Summer Olympics due to injury. His brother Godfrey and sister Audrey both won medals. Géza Nagy
Géza Nagy (29 December 1892, Satoraljaujhely – 13 August 1953, Kaposvár) was a Hungarian chess master. He was Hungarian Champion in 1924. He took 6th at Budapest 1926 (Grandmasters Ernst Grünfeld and Mario Monticelli won). Nagy played for Hungary in Chess Olympiads: * In 1927 at second board in 1st Chess Olympiad in London (+8 –3 =3); * In 1928 at first board in 2nd Chess Olympiad in The Hague (+9 –2 =5). Corrado Valle
Corrado Valle (21 October 1909 – 1976) was an Italian hurdler who was 5th in the 110 m hs at the 1934 European Athletics Championships. Biography Corrado Valle after the finish of his sporting career, about in the end of the 1930s, graduated in economics and commerce. He married twice, and had two daughters, Gabriella from the first and Dada from the second wife. He died in 1976 at the age of 66 in a car accident in Capalbio. Erwin Wegner
Erwin Wegner (5 April 1909 – 16 February 1945) was a German athlete, born in Stettin. Wegner won the silver medal at the 1934 European Championships in the 110 metres hurdles and competed in the Olympic Games as both a hurdler and a decathlete. Career At the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles Wegner competed in the 110 m hurdles and the decathlon. In the hurdles he placed third in his heat in 15.1 and qualified for the semi-finals, where he failed to finish. In the decathlon he placed ninth, winning the hurdles in 15.4 ahead of another specialist, Bob Tisdall. At the 1934 European Championships in Turin Wegner won the silver medal in the hurdles in 14.9, losing only to Hungary's József Kovács. Wegner defeated Kovács at the International University Games in Budapest the following year, winning the gold in 14.7. Joe McCluskey
Joseph Paul McCluskey (June 2, 1911 – August 31, 2002) was an American track and field athlete. During his running career, he won 27 national titles in various distance events and captured the steeplechase title a record nine times in a 13-year period. Biography At the 1932 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California, McCluskey won the bronze medal in the 3,000-meter steeplechase event. However, his medal could have been a silver. A substitute lap counter failed to hold up the number of the laps remaining the first time the runners went past, and the athletes wound up running an extra lap. McCluskey was second at what should have been the end of the regular race but dropped back to third during the extra lap. When offered the opportunity to rerun the race the next day, McCluskey said, "A race has only one finish line" and chose to let the results stand making it the only 3,460-meter steeplechase event ever held in Olympic history. Jack Lovelock
John Edward Lovelock (5 January 1910 – 28 December 1949) was a New Zealand athlete who became the world 1500m and mile record holder and 1936 Olympic champion in the 1500 metres. Early life Lovelock was born in the town of Crushington (near Reefton) as the son of English immigrants. From his early days at school he participated and excelled in fields beyond athletics. At Fairlie School (1919–23) he was dux of the primary school, represented the school in rugby, competed in swimming and athletics, and was a prefect. At Timaru Boys' High School, which he attended as a boarder from 1924, he set school athletics records but was also involved in nearly every area of school life. Luigi Beccali (19 November 1907 – 29 August 1990) was the first Italian to win an Olympic gold medal in running, in the 1500 metres at the 1932 Summer Olympics, and the first Italian to win a European Championship title in athletics. Biography Born in Milan, Luigi Beccali, as a youth, was fascinated by cycling and track and field athletics, but choose the latter, when he met the coach Dino Nai. Luigi Beccali, an Italian champion in 1500 m from 1928 to 1931, became a national hero overnight when he won the Olympic 1500 m gold at Los Angeles. In 1933, Beccali ran three world records. At first he equalled Jules Ladoumègue's world record 3:49.2, then lowered it to 3:49.0. At the end of the year he also set the world record of 2:10.0.
