1931 Western Maryland Green Terror Football Team
The 1931 Western Maryland Green Terror football team was an American football team that represented Western Maryland College (now known as McDaniel College) as an independent during the 1931 college football season. In its sixth season under head coach Dick Harlow, the team compiled a 4–4–2 record and shut out five of its ten opponents. Harlow served nine years as Western Maryland's head football coach. During those years, the school's football team compiled a 60–13–7 record. He was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. During the 1931 season, the team played its home games at Hoffa Field in Westminster, Maryland (two games) and Baltimore Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland (five games). Dick Harlow
Richard Cresson Harlow (October 19, 1889 – February 19, 1962) was an American football player and coach, as well as an oologist. Harlow served as the head coach at Pennsylvania State University (1915–1917), Colgate University (1922–1925), McDaniel College, Western Maryland College (1926–1934), and Harvard University (1935–1942, 1945–1947). He is credited with pioneering modern defensive schemes. Often fielding undersized teams, Harlow coordinated Stunt (football), stunts to avoid Blocking (American football), blockers, rather than trying to overpower them. His offensive style utilized Shift (gridiron football), shifts, Reverse (American football), reverses, and lateral passes. Harlow was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a coach in 1954. Homewood Field is the athletics stadium of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. History It was built in 1906 and has an official capacity of 8,500 people.
