1931 Ogmore By-election
The Ogmore by-election of 1931 was held on 19 May 1931. The by-election was held due to the death of the incumbent Labour MP, Vernon Hartshorn. It was won by the Labour candidate Ted Williams, a miners' agent and a member of Glamorgan County Council. Hartshorn had held the seat since 1918 and at the last general election, had been elected with a majority of over 11,000 over the second placed candidate, the Liberal D. L. Powell. On that occasion the Conservative candidate had come third, and J. R. Campbell, Communist, had finished in last place. Neither the Liberals nor the Conservatives fielded a candidate in the by-election, although the Conservatives would contest the seat at the general election a few months later. Ogmore ( cy, Ogwr) is a constituency created in 1918 represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament by Chris Elmore of the Labour Party. 1946 Ogmore By-election
The 1946 Ogmore by-election was a parliamentary by-election held on 4 June 1946 for the British House of Commons constituency of Ogmore in Wales. Previous MP The seat had become vacant on when the constituency's Labour Member of Parliament (MP), Edward Williams, had been appointed as High Commissioner to Australia. He had been the constituency's MP since the 1931 Ogmore by-election. Candidates Labour selected John Evans, an official in the South Wales Miners' Federation who had stood unsuccessfully for the party in Montgomeryshire at the 1929 general election. Plaid Cymru reselected Trefor Richard Morgan, a former coal miner who was working in farming. He had stood in the constituency in 1945, taking only 2,379 votes. The Ogmore by-election was a UK Parliamentary by-election in the constituency of Ogmore in Wales, on 5 May 2016 following the resignation of the incumbent Huw Irranca-Davies following his decision to contest the coterminous Ogmore constituency in the Welsh Assembly election. Chris Elmore of the Labour Party won the by-election with 52.6 percent of the vote. The by-election was held on the same day as the 2016 Welsh Assembly election as well as elections for the Scottish Parliament, the Northern Ireland Assembly, for the Mayor and Assembly of London and in numerous local authorities in England. The Member of Parliament for Ogmore in Bridgend County Borough, Sir Raymond Powell, of the Labour Party died on 7 December 2001. The by-election to fill the seat was held on 14 February 2002. Labour faced no realistic challenge in this very safe seat and retained it easily, with only Plaid Cymru making progress from their 2001 result. The Socialist Labour Party, who had not previously stood, achieved a good result for a minor party and retained their deposit. Sir Edward John Williams (1 July 1890 – 16 May 1963) was a British Labour Party politician and diplomat. Williams was born in 1890 in Victoria, Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire, to Emanuel Williams and his wife Ada (née James). After attending school in Victoria and Hopkinstown, he started working at Waunllwyd colliery, Ebbw Vale, at the age of 12. Vernon Hartshorn
Vernon Hartshorn (16 March 1872 – 13 March 1931) was a Welsh trade unionist and Labour Party politician who served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1918 until his death. Hartshorn was President of the South Wales Miners' Federation, and a member of the National Executive of the Miners' Federation of Great Britain. He was elected as Member of Parliament for Ogmore at the 1918 general election. He served as Postmaster-General in 1924, made a Privy Counsellor the same year, and became a member of the Simon Commission. In 1930, he was appointed Lord Privy Seal, serving until his death on 13 March 1931. Early life and education Vernon Hartshorn was born on 16 March 1872 in Pontywaun, Monmouthshire.
