1931 Carmarthenshire County Council Election
An election to the Carmarthenshire County Council was held in March 1931. It was preceded by the 1928 election and followed by the 1934 election. Overview of the result The Independent group remained the majority grouping on the Council. In the Llanelli area the potential for Labour to win further ground was complicated by the appearance of Communist Party candidates. Boundary changes There was one boundary change, namely the division of the existing Llandybie ward into two divisions, each of which was won by Labour. Summary of results Only a minority of the 53 divisions were contested. 53 councillors were elected. 1928 Carmarthenshire County Council Election
An election to the Carmarthenshire County Council was held in March 1928. It was preceded by the 1925 election and followed by the 1931 election. Overview of the result The election saw the disappearance of the Conservative and Liberal parties from county elections in Carmarthenshire, and contests would henceforth be between Labour and the Independents. Labour did not make significant progress in 1928 and it was claimed that the party lacked the resources to make a significant challenge. Boundary changes There were no boundary changes. Unopposed returns Only 18 of the 53 divisions were contested, the same number as in 1925. Contested elections Most of the contested elections were in the eastern part of the county. Elsewhere, there were some contests where Independent candidates faced each other. Two such contests at Llanybydder and Rhydcymerau saw two Independents who were also brothers lose their seats. Carmarthenshire County Council
Carmarthenshire County Council ( cy, Cyngor Sir Gaerfyrddin) is the local authority for the county of Carmarthenshire, Wales. It provides a range of services including education, planning, transport, social services and public safety. The council is one of twenty-two unitary authorities that came into existence on 1 April 1996 under the provisions of the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994. It took over local government functions previously provided by the three district councils of Carmarthen, Dinefwr, and Llanelli, as well as the county-level services in the area from Dyfed County Council, all of which councils were abolished at the same time. John Henry Williams (Llanelli MP)
John Henry Williams (19 May 1869 – 7 February 1936), also known as Snowden Williams, was a Liverpool-born Welsh Labour Party politician. Educated in Cardiff, Oxford and at the London Hospital, he graduated with the Licence of the Society of Apothecaries (LSA) in 1902. He was initially employed as a ship's surgeon for the Booth Shipping Line, before becoming a general practitioner in Burry Port Burry Port ( cy, Porth Tywyn) is a port town and community in Carmarthenshire, Wales, on the Loughor estuary (Moryd Llwchwr), to the west of Llanelli and south-east of Kidwelly. William Nathaniel Jones
William Nathaniel Jones, commonly known as W.N. Jones, (20 March 1858 – 24 May 1934) was a Welsh Liberal politician, businessman and soldier. Jones, who served as a Justice of the Peace in Carmarthenshire, married Margaret Francis of Llandeilo. In business, he was a director of the Ammanford Gas Company and the Duke Anthracite Collieries Ltd and the owner of Birchgrove Steelworks, Swansea. He was appointed High Sheriff of Carmarthenshire for 1924. In 1889, Jones became an inaugural member of the Carmarthenshire County Council. He also served on Ammanford Urban District Council. Carmarthenshire County Council Elections
Carmarthenshire ( cy, Sir Gaerfyrddin; or informally ') is a county in the south-west of Wales. The three largest towns are Llanelli, Carmarthen and Ammanford. Carmarthen is the county town and administrative centre. The county is known as the "Garden of Wales" and is also home to the National Botanic Garden of Wales. Carmarthenshire has been inhabited since prehistoric times. The county town was founded by the Romans, and the region was part of the Kingdom of Deheubarth in the High Middle Ages. After invasion by the Normans in the 12th and 13th centuries it was subjugated, along with other parts of Wales, by Edward I of England. There was further unrest in the early 15th century, when the Welsh rebelled under Owain Glyndŵr, and during the English Civil War.
