Rochdale ( ) is a large town in Greater Manchester, England, at the foothills of the South Pennines in the dale (landform), dale on the River Roch, northwest of Oldham and northeast of Manchester. George Turnbull (footballer, Born 1911)
George Edward Turnbull (25 May 1911 – 1996) was an English footballer who played as a centre forward or inside left in the Football League for Rochdale and Darlington. He had trials with Newcastle United and Guildford City, and played non-league football for clubs including Sunderland Forge, Bank Head Albion, Shiney Row Swifts, Easington Colliery Welfare and Sunderland Electrical Undertaking. Life and career Turnbull was born in Sunderland, which was then in County Durham. After a trial with Newcastle United early in the 1930–31 season, he signed for Rochdale. Fred Appleyard (13 June 1909 – March 1995) was an English professional footballer who played as a left-half or inside-left in the Football League for Rochdale, and in non-League football for Norden St James, Norden Congregationalists and Rochdale St Clement's. Life and career Fred Appleyard was born on 13 June 1909 in Norden, Rochdale, Lancashire. He was the second son of George Appleyard, a domestic coachman, and his wife Sarah, and had an older brother, Willie. Appleyard played in non-League football for Norden St James before signing for Third Division North club Rochdale on amateur forms in January 1928. He made his debut on 9 March 1929 in a 5–1 defeat away to Tranmere Rovers in the league, which proved to be his only appearance of the 1928–29 season. John Everest (born 20 July 1908) was an Irish former professional footballer. During his career, he made over 100 appearances in the Football League. Career After beginning his career with non-league sides Dunnington and Heslington, Everest turned professional with York City in 1926 before joining Stockport County in 1928, scoring seven goals in seven matches for the ''Hatters'' including four during a 7–1 victory over Carlisle United on 18 January 1930. Originally playing as a forward, he converted to playing as a defender in 1931 while playing for Blackpool. Everest joined Cardiff City in 1934 following a recommendation from George Blackburn, who had seen Everest play against his Cheltenham Town side in the FA Cup.
