1929 World Figure Skating Championships
The World Figure Skating Championships is an annual figure skating competition sanctioned by the International Skating Union in which figure skaters compete for the title of World Champion. Men's competitions took place from March 4th to 5th in London, United Kingdom. Ladies' and pairs' competitions took place from February 2nd to 3rd in Budapest, Hungary. Walter Jakobsson
Walter Andreas Jakobsson (6 February 1882 – 10 June 1957) was a Finnish figure skater, and the oldest figure skating Olympic champion (at age 38). As a single skater, he won the Finnish national championship in 1910 and 1911. In 1910, he partnered with German figure skater Ludowika Eilers. As pairs skaters, they won the World Championship in 1911, 1914, and 1923, and the Olympic gold in 1920. They finished second at the 1924 Olympics and fifth in 1928. Jakobsson studied engineering in Berlin, where he met Eilers in 1907. They married in 1911, and in 1916 moved to Helsinki, where Jakobsson got a job of the technical director of Kone OY (now Konecranes), a leading manufacturers of cranes. He held that post until retiring in 1947. Yvonne de Ligne (née ''Geurts'', 18 May 1902 – 1952) was a Belgian figure skater. She competed in the ladies singles event at all major competitions from 1929 to 1936, including Winter Olympics, world and European championships. Her best achievements were sixth place at the 1929 and 1932 world championships and 1932 Olympics, and fifth place at the 1933 European Championships. She was born Yvonne Geurts, and changed her last name after marrying speed skater Charles de Ligne. During World War II she fell in love with Dutch figure skater Jacob Hartog, who then lived in Antwerp. Melitta Brunner
Melitta Kreckow Brunner (née Brunner, 28 January 1907 – 26 May 2003) was an Austrian figure skater. Competing in pairs with Ludwig Wrede, she became the 1928 Olympic bronze medalist and a three-time World medalist, winning two silvers and a bronze. As a single skater, she was the 1929 World bronze medalist. After retiring from competitions Brunner taught skating in Switzerland and Great Britain. In December 1932 she married Paul Kreckow, a German figure skater from Berlin. They married in London, where they were giving skating demonstrations. Fritzi Burger
Friederike "Fritzi" Burger (6 June 1910 – 16 February 1999) was an Austrian figure skater. She was a two-time Olympic silver medalist (1928, 1932), a four-time World medalist (silver in 1929 and 1932, bronze in 1928 and 1931), the 1930 European champion, and a four-time Austrian national champion (1928–1931). Life and career Burger was born on 6 June 1910 in Vienna. Her family was Jewish. She won the first-ever contested European Championships, held in 1930. Sonja Henie, who held a monopoly in women's figure skating at the time, was not present at this championship and Burger never defeated her in competition. She placed second behind Henie at the 1928 and 1932 Winter Olympics, and in the 1929 and 1932 World Championships. Ulrich Salchow
Karl Emil Julius Ulrich Salchow (7 August 1877 – 19 April 1949) was a Danish-born Swedish figure skater, who dominated the sport in the first decade of the 20th century. Salchow won the World Figure Skating Championships ten times, from 1901 to 1905, and from 1907 to 1911. This is still a record, which he shares with Sonja Henie who also won 10 titles in the 1920s and 1930s, and with Irina Rodnina who won 10 titles in the 1960s and 1970s. Salchow did not compete in the 1906 World Championships that were held in Munich, as he feared that he would not be judged fairly against Gilbert Fuchs of Germany. When figure skating was first contested at the Summer Olympic Games in London (1908), Salchow also won the title with ease, became one of the oldest figure skating Olympic champions.
