The 1929 Minneapolis Red Jackets season was their fifth in the league and first as the Red Jackets. The team improved on their previous output of 0–6, winning one game. Herb Joesting
Herbert Walter Joesting (April 17, 1905 – October 1, 1963) was an American football player and coach. He was a consensus All-American fullback while playing for the Minnesota Golden Gophers in both 1926 and 1927. He also played three seasons in the National Football League (NFL). He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1954. Early years Joesting was born in Little Falls, Minnesota, and grew up in Owatonna, Minnesota. He played high school football at Owatonna High School and set the school's scoring record in 1923 with 89 points. He became known as the "Owatonna Thunderbolt". University of Minnesota Joesting enrolled at the University of Minnesota in 1924 and played college football for the Minnesota Golden Gophers football team from 1925 to 1927. Herbert Joseph Franta (March 10, 1905 – August 3, 1950) was an American football player, a tackle and guard in the National Football League. Biography Franta was born on March 10, 1905, in Minnesota. His nickname was "Chief". Career Franta played with the Minneapolis Red Jackets during the 1929 NFL season before splitting the following season between the Red Jackets and the Green Bay Packers. As such, he was a member of the 1930 NFL Champion Packers. He died in a car crash in 1950 on his way to Chicago to move his family. Reuben J. Ursella (January 11, 1890 – February 1980) was a professional football player-coach who played during the early years of the National Football League. During his NFL career Rube played for the Minneapolis Marines, Akron Indians, Hammond Pros, Minneapolis Red Jackets and the Rock Island Independents. In January 1926, he also played exhibition games with Jim Thorpe and his independent team, the Tampa Cardinals. Ursella played college football for the University of Minnesota. Ben Oas (April 27, 1901 – February 1, 1976) was an American football player. Oas was born in 1901 in Minnesota. He played college football as a center and fullback for St Mary's (MN) from 1925 to 1928. He also played center for the St. Mary's basketball team. Malvyn John "Mally" Nydahl, sometimes spelled Nydall (November 24, 1906 – May 27, 1979), was an American football, baseball, and basketball player and orthopedic surgeon. He played college football for Minnesota and in the National Football League (NFL) for the Minneapolis Red Jackets (1929–1930) and Frankford Yellow Jackets (1930–1931). Wilbur Harvey Lundell (June 21, 1907 – July 7, 1993), sometimes known as Bob Lundell or "Brute" Lundell, was an American football, baseball, and basketball player. Lundell was born in Pueblo, Colorado, in 1907. He attended Edison High School in Minneapolis and Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota. Fred Oscar "Fritz" Loven (June 11, 1894 – November 1, 1975) was an American football player. He played professional football for the Minneapolis Red Jackets in 1929 and thereafter lived for more than 40 years a life of "socialized exclusion" in a cabin in the woods.
